Yeah, I like this one too. It's pretty much the opposite of Scarface, yet it's still shares a lot of similarities, what with De Palma at the helm and Pacino playing an ethnic gangster.
I really doubt the sequel is worth seeing. It was straight-to-video, so...

I've never seen or heard of a Carlito's Way 2... but I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that the second one is probably the worst movie sequel since "American Psycho 2".

Sean Penn was fucking amazing in this movie. This is when I first started taking him seriously as an actor.
The movie overall was good, but nothing great. The realtionship between Pacino and Penelope Ann Miller seemed a bit contrived to me.
Agreed on both points. I thought De Palma's direction was pretty close to flawless - the film is VERY well done from a directorial stand-point. That final shootout is one of the best I've ever seen. But the only problem was the relationship subplot - it, as you said, felt very contrived. Some of the dialogue was really weak and there were just too many cliches - "You Are So Beautiful"? Come on.

There's a second one??
My God, the first one was AWESOME. I think the recent one with Jay Hernandez was incredible. Some parts just don't make sense; like when the brother of the girl shot Carlito. He should've died right there.

One of my favorite DePalma films. I love Pacino in this, Sean Penn is great, and the last 30 minutes is among the most exciting stretches of suspense I've ever seen.

the ending was awesome... it was even close to the scarface ending in my book

The second one blows beyond belief.
