Anybody notice who has the best record in baseball? It's May 22nd, 40+ games into the season and the Tigers are the best team in baseball. Check out their stats. They lead the league in ERA by about one full run. They have 8 shut outs! They are fourth in the league in homeruns and they play half their games at Comerica/Yellowstone Park. They may not make the playoffs but for a LONG suffering fan this 7 week stretch of baseball has been incredible.

They've had talent for a while. Jim Leyland is a very, very good manager.

It goes to show how much of a baseball town Detroit is. As long as the team is even near .500, that stadium is packed.
IRod and Magglio were some pretty big risks, but it's awesome to see both work out.

Im a white sox fan and they have looked very impressive. Im not gonna be one of those morans that think just because they've never done it before, that they will fall apart. If they stay healthy, and with the addition of Leyland, there have a real good chance to make a push for the playoffs.

i have to partially agree with pjguy. gibson will always be viewed as a dodger by everyone except michigonians because the one thing of consequence he ever did in his career came in that uniform. sure, he won as many titles with detroit as he did with LA, and he had his best years in detroit, but he didn't have vin scully aid him in contributing to perhaps the most dramatic moment in baseball history there.

Gibson had a massive HR in the 1984 WS as well, game 5. Stupid big market bias.

yeah, but there are big home runs every world series. not all of them are as dramatic as the one in '88.

when I went to a Gibson signing earlier in the year I was talking in line to a bunch of Tiger fans. They all said Gibson will always be remembered as a Dodger for that home run and that many Tiger fans dont like Gibson all that much, for whatever reasons I forget now.

NINE! They now have nine shutouts. Young rookie right hander Justin Verlander threw his first complete game shutout last night against the Royals. Man do the Royals suck, they remind me of Tiger teams of the past. The Royals have 10 wins all year. the Tigers have 9 Shutout wins and have won 9 of their last 10. I could really get used to winning and being a feared team...
**must focus, brace for inevitible letdown...**

I do not like the fact that Verlander threw a complete game last night, tossing 114 pitches in the process. They had an 8-0 lead. He had 88 pitches by the end of the 7th. There was no reason to leave him out there for the entire game. He's a rookie, and has never logged so many innings as he has thus far this season.
Being a Cubs' fan in addition to be a Tigers' fan, I know what over-use of a pitcher's arm can do, particularly over the course of a long season. Ask Kerry Wood or Mark Prior.
I just hope last night's start doesn't come back to haunt the Tigers and Verlander.
