There were about 100 films made more interesting than Shawshank Redemption, including Fargo, Naked, Chungking Express, Being John Malchovich, Goodfellas, Metropolitan, Killing Zoe, etc.

"Interesting" is not the only attribute that defines a good movie.

Well yeah. I consider "unforgiven" to be more of an interesting film than Shawshank, but Shawshank was so well crafted of a film with its music and atmosphere and what not. Hey its alright to conform to it. It deserves all the praise it gets for not winning one academy award.

Shawshank is a great film, but would you call something being played on TBS 8 times a month, credible cinema? Its a fairly safe film, written by Stephen King, starring Tim Robbins and Morgan Freeman both of whom had already proven themselves to play fairly liberal-minded empathetic characters.
For me a film like Naked or Chungking Express is much easier to appreciate, the directors were taking risks stylistically and thematically and its a much more difficult task to appeal to a mainstream audience and be relatively successful. I could even adore Pulp Fiction, the dialogue is fairly over-the-top and Tarantino didn't hesitate to borrow from much more subversive and obscure films which he loved.
"Safe" films can be great films but they are just not transcendent.

La Haine (or: Hate) is a french film about alienated youth in Paris. Very gritty and insightful. I'd call it the ultimate Generation-X movie.
As to your remarks on the Shawshank Redemption: I agree that it's a relatively safe movie and that it does not excel either visually or thematically. It does however excel in acting performances and direction/editing. The pacing is close to perfection and every scene has it's place.
It may be a safe story, but it's a story told brilliantly.

It's a French movie by Matthieu Kassovitz (who has played in Spielberg's Munich and Amelie). It is the story of 3 friends living in the suburban area of Paris, facing frustration and everyday routine. They have no jobs and struggle to make something of their lives. It had a great impact when it was released, and the lines from the trailer are famous here.

I'd say a good half, but not all. Unforgiven, Heat and Shawshank are up there for me as well as the two you mentioned. But LA Confidential certainly deserves to be in the top 5.
