May 24, 2006 -- WASHINGTON - In a surprise move yesterday, Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton called for "most of the country" to return to a speed limit of 55 mph in an effort to slash fuel consumption.

Why stop at 55? If we really want to save fuel we should lower it to 25.
Ideas like this show that some politicians have no common sense at all. Imagine driving through Kansas and having to slow down to 55. You could go 85-90 on some of those highways out west and still not feel like you are getting anywhere.

I can only imagine many of her Upstate NY constituents will be e-mailing and calling her office to complain. I just did. No way the NY Thruway goes back to 55 MPH.
I try to get to Utah yearly for mountain biking. One of the joys is flying into Denver andrenting a convertable in order to enjoy the drive to Moab. I couldn't imagine going less than 90 through the dessert, there's nothing to hit and the road's straight.
The 55 mph is just a bad idea. If she wants to promote fuels consumption why not introduce a mandatory minimum miles per gallon requirement on new car and truck sales.

If she gets the nomination for '08, Democrats will have proven beyond a doubt that they are not substatively different from the Republicans and they have no serious intention of regaining power. Way to suck guys.
The thinking behind this proposal is still backwards. Lowering the speed limit is not the way to conserve fuel. How about we build cars and trucks that don't run on gasoline? Then we price them so people can afford them.

Easier said than done.
Yeah, I know, I work at Ford. I don't know how we force people off of gasoline. The best idea I can think of is to mandate that every new car or truck must meet a federal guideline of 50 mph or else it must run on something other than gasoline. Legislation like that would get companies to get moving and change things now.

Ford and GM have just dispatched teams to your house to kill you.

*mpg? 50 mph is even stupider than 55 mph
But anyway, I think 50's really unfeasible at this moment. Somewhere in the 20s sounds about right for now. What should have happened a long time ago is to include SUVs in the CAFE standards--that's a good start.

This is absolutely true, and sadly, I'm sure there's a large section of the party who is seriously considering running her.
