How about a general Tool appreciation thread, which we don't seem to have yet, where we can discuss how great Tool is? Or how much they suck, if Billy's around. Either way.

So, um, does Stinkfist feature one of the greatest metaphors in lyrical history or is it just me? Also, is Lateralus the best Tool song yet, or is it just me.

Hint: it's not just me.

I have my ups and downs with them. Sometimes I like them a lot, others it just seems like boring dreck. I'm in the latter phase right now.

But I will give them massive props for their cover of No Quarter.

I can confidently list my top four favorite bands. I can't ever pin down a decisive fifth, but Tool is easily in those top four. I find everything they do to be completely mind-blowing and utterly genius.

I've never heard this, honestly.

Easily one of the best live shows I have ever seen. Great music, great visuals, great lighting. I actually saw big dudes wiping tears from their eyes after they played Disposition/Reflection/Triad.

I really need to see them live.

Songs about anal sex and fisting....kind of juvenile

I'd still go see them live

Dude, the song is not at all about that. He uses it as a metaphor for becoming so densensitized by society and the media (especially the television media) that you can't feel anything--pain, pleasure, compassion, reality, anything--anymore.

Yea, I know...on one hand its admittedly funny and on the other its an absolute turn-off. Its kind of like a tacky art exhibit, they made something really odd, and called it beautiful, called it art. I dunno if its for me. I sorta grew out of it :?

Oh, you moved onto "The Arcade Fire", right?

I dunno, man. I love Tool. I've yet to find another band so incredibly complex and masterful in everything they do. Christ, the obscure mathematics, philosophy, and religion references mingled with the best prog metal ever recorded... damn, it's just genius.

Tool is amazing, but I'll say Liquid Tension Experiment is the best at prog metal.

and go find a copy of Salival and listen to No Quarter right now.

Yea thats the thing, I don't really get the whole ambiguousness behind the lyrics....I think the fans are obsessed with the band in ridiculous amounts of ways. You go on to toolshed.down.net (if its even still there) and the fans have wasted hours of time posting endless BS about how this song revolves around some sort of mathematical sequence, or this obscure philosophy, and its all nonsense really. They're all a bunch of 18 year-olds who've either taken too much LSD or taken it once and had some sort of religious experience. Good for them. Maynard has a fairly excellent voice (amazing range really) but his lyrics are really not that great, just very obscure (especially Lateralus and its supposedly a genius piece of work)...a lot like Robert Plant's stuff on the later Zep albums. Come on, how can anyone be touched by The Patient? Its pretty cheesy stuff really. Really no effective melodies either. I think his APC stuff is equally good if not better. So I blame the fans for turning me off. I would definitely try and go see them live on the next tour I'm sure, they are amazing musicians (the bass effects are mesmerizing), and I'd be one of the first to check out the next album even though I don't expect anything. I just don't listen to them anymore. Aenema is a good album.

So yea, to each their own....Auggie, I highly suggest you check out The Arcade Fire, wonderful band really, I think I'm going to go the fan site right now and post a 3 page argument on the meaning of "Crown of Love."

And they are fucking awesome live.

See, I love the depth of the lyrics. My one qualm with the band is that they are all elitist fucking assholes who think they're smarter than everyone around them. Which may be true, but they don't have to be dicks about it, even if it is. The fans are like that too, I guess. But what's wrong with intelligence in popular music?

:luv:

I thought you were gonna say, heard it, hated it. Yes, they are typical indie rock posers but the music doesn't lie, Funeral is an amazing album. PM me.

I like Tool, but I can really only listen to their most popular songs. Sometimes I find myself fast forwarding the CD during the boring parts. But the songs that rock...well, rock.

Maynard reminds me of an art school kid. Sure he gets a bit too deep sometimes, and doesn't make much sense sometimes, but his ideas are fascinating if you get it. There's nothing wrong with not getting it, but if you don't it doesn't make much sense. I love the way they never show themselves outside of the live shows, and their shows are absolutely amazing spectacles!
My favorite song has to be Aenima! The way he just goes off on L.A. is great!

Tool are amazing and they are easily one of my favorite bands. Maynards voice is awesome, gives me chills sometimes. That scream in The Grudge is just unreal. I have yet to see their live show but from some of the video clips I have seen online it looks like something that one has to experience kinda like Pink Floyds live show. Anyone have any Tool boots? I only have one and I want more!

It's funny, cause I was just thinking about creating a Tool thread earlier this morning as I was listening to Aenema on my was into work today. I love most of Tool's stuff but this song really stands out to me:

http://www.asklyrics.com/display/Aenema_LYRICS/92574

I just LOVE the anger/disgust for his fellow man and the Hollywood scene that flows through this song. Anyone who gets a chance to catch these guys live really should, even if they're not your favorite band, well worth the money!

Meh. Some of their stuff is quite good, but some of it I honestly find boring.

And you must hear the cover as soon as possible. It's quite well done.

Finally a tool appreciation thread! For me its TOOL / PJ all the way. My all time favorite 2. ive been in the love with the music for years. And they put on one of the best live shows ive ever seen. To this day 8 years after its release Aenima is still my all time favorite album (including all the "filler" songs)
