I have a record player, and I borrowed a bunch of old albums from my dad...One was called "Music of Today" and it was basically a compilation of songs from various artists...

Donovan's "Skip-A-Long Sam" was on it, and it blew me away...I've heard the songs "Mellow-Yellow" and "Hurdy Gurdy Man" before and was wondering if any of his albums are worth picking up. If so, what ones would you recomend?

Didn't he also sing "Season of the witch"? Cause that song is awesome.

Does your dad have any Grand Funk Railroad??

Holy freakin' crap...Donovan rules. I just picked up his Greatest hits over the weekend...I didn't know where to start, so I thought I'd do the cliche thing...needless to say, I'm an instant fan and will be picking up as many Donovan albums as I can get.

You answered your own question. I was going to recommend the Greatest Hits. That wouldn't happen to be remastered would it? The copy I've got has all the funky fresh Donavan jams on it, but the fidelity is doo-doo. My faves from that disc are Sunshine Superman, There is a Mountain, which incidently provides the main melodic theme of The Allman Bros. Mountain Jam, and Hurdy Gurdy Man. I keep waiting for a stoner hip hop group to lay down rhymes over the Hurdy Gurdy Man music. It would be "dope"

Yea, I got the remasted one...it pretty freakin' sweet...I like all those songs you listed, as well as Season of the Witch, Atlantis, and Colurs. I can't get enough of Riki Tiki Tevi, though.

Yeah, the spoken word part of that song is cheese, but when he gets around to singing and the band kicks in... a cool tune to say the least.

I picked up a Donovan best of earlier this week with a bunch of unreleased tracks on it, and on in particular, titled 'Breezes Of Patchulie', may be one of the best songs I've ever heard. And this is an outtake!

Donovan gets so much less credit than he deserves. I mean, he's even made me love a song with Patchulie in the title! I fucking HATE that shit!

I love the Barabajagal album. It's so fucking good.

Word to the person who mentioned Colors, too. That song kicks ass. I first heard it on The Rules of Attraction, put to great use.

If you can find it G Love does a great cover of "Season of the Witch". I think it was from Austin City Limits a few years ago. It's a pretty cool version.
