Anyone wanna recommend some good film noir movies? I watched The Maltese Falcon last night, and enjoyed it quite a bit. I bought this set today. I will post back here after I have watched some of them.

Film noir is a stylistic approach to genre films forged in depression-era detective and gangster movies and hard-boiled detective stories which were a staple of pulp fiction

Noir is French for "dark." Like the other guy said, it's basically all the black and white detective films with the distinctive dark tone and shadows and such.

42 pretty much listed my favorites....Rififi, Third Man, Touch of Evil. The Big Sleep.

L.A. Confidential is probably the best modern noir around.

A couple of French noirs I enjoy alot, both by Jean-Pierre Melville, are Bob Le Flambeur and Le Samourai. Two of the coolest movies I've ever seen.

Very good list. You might also want to check out L.A. COnfidential, which is considered to be a "modern film noir."

I only mentioned movies that qualify not only by theme and visual style, but also by period. Most critics say the film-noir era is starts and ends with Stranger on the Third Floor (1940) and Touch of Evil (1958) respectively.

If we include modern noir as well, then Chinatown can't be omitted. And neither can Dark City.

I was going to add Chinatown as well.

I just realised that I shouldn't have included M either. Its from '31 or '32, I think.

Oh, and let me include The Singing Detective. The british miniseries starring Michael Gambon, not the crummy american remake with Robert Downey Jr.

http://imdb.com/title/tt0090521/

That series is absolutely brilliant.

Only one of the absolute best film noirs ever made! From 1944, starring Dana Andrews, Gene Tierney, and Vincent Price. About a detective investigating the murder of a woman, but aren't they all? Directed by Otto Preminger. It's #01 in the Fox Film Noir series, and I highly recommend it.
