I'm trying a little experiment here:

Please answer the following question, immediately post that answer, then come back and read the rest of this post:

What is the universal language?

***

***

***

***

***

***

***

***

***

So I asked you to answer before reading the rest of this because a friend of mine asked this question of 4 different people and got 4 different answers. I want to see how many more answers we can generate.

The four answers to "What is the universal language?"

1) love

2) English

3) Math

4) gestures/facial expressions i.e. body language (that was mine)

I'll add your answers as they are posted.

Thanks for playing along.

**********************
RM answers:

1) Math X5

2) Science

3) Esperanto X2 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Esperanto

4) body language/gestures X2

5) love X2

6) forms (? I hope she elaborates!)

7) farts

8 ) round ball

9) music

Maybe for humans on earth gestures would work, but I think if you are going to talk about the UNIVERSE, communicating with beings from other planets included, math would be the only way.

Our hand and body gestures wouldn't mean much to a being if it didn't have any hands or had a completely different body structure.

if they didnt have arms or hands or a different body structure, how the hell are they going to write out a mathematical equation?

i'm thinking of a star trek episode where captain picard tries to communicate with alien captors by punching in prime numbers on a key pad to show that he is an intellegent species and to try to get their attention.

it doesn't have to do with grabbing a BIC pen and writing down on a piece of paper... it has to do with the fact that 1+1=2 is true everywhere in the universe at all times. It doesn't matter how the numbers are spelled, i.e. someone from ancient egypt would not understand that mathematical equation but they would understand the concept.

but its written in english, what if their math is based on pictures?

and how in the hell can you prove 1+1=2 is true everywhere?

That's what i'm saying... it doesn't matter how you write it (that's what I meant by the equation, which you called English for some reason). Talk to an ancient egyptian, and he/she will understand that "2-ness", i.e. what it is to be "2".

and I'm not getting into an argument proving that 1+1=2.

What are you going to say with math? 2+2=4? I have a right angle?

You all saw Contact. All math gets you is a billion dollar dream machine.

 LOVE, people!

But that's bringing another language into account (i.e. trying to put the alien language into english). the mathematics of it are universal - it is only when we convert it into our languages does it's universality (is that a word) cease to exist.

About as easily as telling a being that you come in peace with a series of hand and face gestures.

The laws of science and math (as we understand them) do not change throughout the universe, unlike spoken/written language and perception.
