good question. but what i'd like to know is what the average audience of concerts is nowadays. is 8,000 people too much or too many?

It has to be way over 8,000 now. They sold out 3 shows in Boston at roughly 24,000 people a show.

they just happened to play smaller venues on the last tour, cause the boss and larger acts took the big venues...and from what i gather they sell out most arena shows...not to shabby a feat

I'm not sure there's any way to know for 100% sure. PinkPop in 92 was their largest audience up to that point, and may still be. It's almost definitely one of those European festival shows, they played a few in 2000 also, but the thing is it's nearly impossible to know how many people are at one of those, or how many are watching Pearl Jam when they're playing.

Soldier Field in 95 is probably up there, but I would say one of the Pinkpop festivals would have to be the biggest. Go to http://www.fivehorizons.com they may have crowd sizes listed in the concert chronology.

Rock am Ring 2000 had ~100.000 ppl for the entire festival. But they have 3 stages. PJ played friday nights and not all of them watched PJ playing. My guess was 65-70k for the PJ show. Crowd was really packed to about 150 m from the stage. You can see the crowd on one of the clips on TB2K. The one with the giant big top in the back. Awesome night with heavy lightning in the sky behind that big top.

Some google research taught me that:

Rock am Ring: main stage holds 50.000.

Rock im Park: main stage holds 60.000

Pinkpop main stage holds 60.000

Roskilde main stage holds 70.000

But indeed it is impossible to know how many were watching Pearl Jam play.

Pearl Jam 'only' shows:

Soldier Field 1995: 45.000.
Lisbon 2000 had 40.000.
Sydney 1995 had 41.000.
San Francisco 1995 had 53.440
