so i consider myself a new pornographers fan which led me to look into neko case's solo career since i love pretty much every tnp song she is on (yes, i will get around to listening to destroyer as well).

through a combination of reading online reviews and what was available at my local record store, i came home one day with fox confessor brings the flood and it is a truly great album.

of course, neko's voice needs no elaboration for new porno fans around here, but i'll tell those of you reading this who don't know her voice yet that it is haunting, beautiful, and unique. for a good example, listen to "bleeding heart show" (for a rm discussion on that song go here: http://forums.theskyiscrape.com/vie ... hp?t=41466).

the music is kinda country, but not overly twangy; or in more exact terms, not like the "country" you hear on the radio. she has an all star cast of supporting musicians on this album including garth hudson of the band and member of calexico.

i know that if anyone is in the least bit swayed by this thread, they will want a track recommendation off of the album and here it is: "hold on, hold on". if you like it, do yourself a favor and buy the album.

once i allow myself to go back to a record store i'm most likely going to pick up another one of her albums, depending on what they have, of course.

here's a couple "professional" reviews of it:
http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=am ... 6dtrauklox

this is from amazon:
Quote:
Nine seconds into her first studio album since 2002's Blacklisted, and there it is. You can't miss it. The voice. Instantly recognizable and uniquely commanding, it has been uniformly overlooked by the masses and beloved by those who have caught on. And, believe it or not, it gets even better, whether Neko Case is warbling like a porch-swing neighbor to Loretta Lynn ("Margaret vs. Paulene," "John Saw That Number"), pontificating from the spiritual pulpit of Etta James ("Lion's Jaws," "Maybe Sparrow"), or unleashing the high-octane zeal of a power-pop spitfire ("Hold On Hold On," "The Needle Has Landed"). Her uncanny, often eccentric lyrics have always been delivered with an inherent passion behind the impulse, but rarely have they approached the boldness of these dozen--many of which were inspired by generations of tales from her Ukrainian ancestors. As usual, Case's industry running buddies collaborate to make the sounds behind her, from Calexico to Howe Gelb of Giant Sand to the Band's renowned Garth Hudson. Still, it all comes back to the voice, that serenading urgency that asks in the title song, "How can people not know what beauty this is?" Yes, there are some to ask, how not? --Scott Holter

carry on.

I've been a huge fan of hers for quite sometime. One of the most amazing voices I've ever heard.I seen her in Philly a couple of months ago and was just blown away........She was kicked off the Grand Old Opry when she first got started for wearing a t shirt on stage........I have quite a few recordings if anyone is interested her stuff is hard to come by as she isn't taper friendly

Neko is absolutely amazing.

show i saw earlier this year at First Ave is still prolly the best show i've seen this year, or at least one of three anyway.

hadn't seen her solo since opening for Nick Cave in '02 (was postponed after 9/11), damn she's so great live.

Kelly Hogan added a lot too

if you like fox confessor check out blacklisted also. a great record, although could be a little more "twangy". deep red bells is a standout on it.

Fox Confessor is an absolutely excellent album.

That's the only record I've listened to.

Lion's Jaw is my favorite tune. It's so short...so perfectly short.

i'm still listening to fox confessor brings the flood almost every day, folks. great, great stuff.

the highlight of my weekend will hopefully be picking up another neko album or two and mmj's at dawn.

here are two performances she's done (one on leno and the other on letterman):

She's 40 years old and a lesbian, take that into account those of you posting some of these ridiculous opinions.

Oh dear, can't anybody get past her once good looks to actually admit this is boring, derivative and terribly sugar coated. Tell me, if you market yourself as "so authenticly country-Cline" why do you go out of your way to sound so brown-nosedly radio friendly... Nashville ain't gonna bite, not because you are oh so tragically authentic, but because you did your putting out in the old indie-punk rock biz when you were still a cute and fresh drummer.

I remember I bought Blacklisted and Tift Merritt's debut at the same time. Tift's record was better, but Neko's career is 100x stronger.
