Me and the wife went on vacation last week to Maine and we hit Portland for the first time and then made our way to the usual (Bar Harbor). Anyways, the day we spent in Portland I happened to be wearing the blue avocado tour shirt. I was in best buy looking at CDs when I heard this lady saying "Pearl Jam... Pearl Jam?" She then proceeded to chat with me for a minute about what shows I went to and she just so happened to have went to Albany as well.

So then about 1/2 hour later I was checking out and one of the employees walks up to me... "Pearl Jam, did you catch them in Boston?" and we chatted for a few minutes about the band.

Later on that day, we and the wife head down to the harbor district and hit the lighthouses. There's a guy there with his child and he said, "Pearl Jam, which show did you catch?". He talked about how he had went to Boston (night 1 I think). And we chatted briefly.

I wear the shirt out all of the time at home and I usually get weird looks because I am wearing a shirt with an avocado on it. And no one has ever talked about Pearl Jam with me at home. The wife thought it was cool that we had such positive interactions with people about Pearl Jam, since she isn't really a music fan per se.

I came to one conclusion last week:

Maine kicks ass and Pearl Jam fans rock!!!

It would be cool if you could stop by at least once to check it out, so you can at least tell me it is a big piece of crap. Thanks.

As of this post, i've conversed (if you consider this conversing) with three people from Canton. I'm shocked ova here. Canton is tiny, and the north country is pretty cool.

Oh, and bar harbor is awsome, but the water hurts your feet.

I learned to love Pearl Jam in Maine! Doesn't surprise me at all.

My husband and some of his buddies were playing music on our back deck one weekend (about 13 years ago). They played Alive and when they were done, we could hear people on the street screaming "Yeah!" and clapping. We couldn't seem the people through the trees but we could hear them.

Maine is an awesome place. Sometimes I miss it (but not in the winter!)

That story alone makes me want to visit Maine.

Cool site, hiprocks. I like your takes. I just wish I had the discipline to do something like that.

If you ever go to Portland or Ba Haba, keep driving north, and rid yourself and your car of anything illegal, and hit the Maritime Provinces of Canada. It's breathtaking. Good people, great music.

Many PJ fans and great live music!

PS-Sorry for putting this on a ME thread.....But I find Mainer's and Maritimers have a lot in common.

Maine is a great place. Portland is a fun town with a great bar district. It doesn't surprise me that there is an abundance of PJ fans, they are 1-1.5 hours away from Boston.

I went to school in Maine and probably spent about 700 dollars on pearl jam bootlegs when I was there. Ah, the 50 dollar bootleg days.

I grew up in Maine (Bangor), so the PJ obsession took full force there for me. I still fondly remember the summer of 96, getting shut out of tickets to the Augusta show (a mere hour's drive from my house) and then a few days later going nuts when a little blue 10Club flyer came in the mail saying I could buy a pair of tickets to any show I wanted... thank you, Ticketmaster-boycott, for bringing PJ to the Pine Tree State!

I hated those days. I've got way too many bad $50 boots. Glad I'm not alone.

Cool, do you take the ferry over to Bar Harbor or drive the long way round? No, shit, that's Halifax I'm thinking of. I've been to St. John, passing through once on the way to PEI, right? Either way, I like Maine, Bangor is pretty much the anti-NYC, so any time I find myself getting sick of the big city I take a trip home - in fact I've got a week and a half coming up over the week of 4th of July, can't wait...

I'm trying to drag the wife up that way sometime. I want to cross the Confederation Bridge... I saw that thing on TV and it looks like I would probably piss my pants if I crossed it during the winter when the ice starts coming in. Our Maine vacations started when I suggested St. John's and she started looking south. I think she would be sold on the Bay of Fundy if she could see whales from the shore.

If I could catch the Hip in St. John's and turn it into a vacation, that would be the most awesome thing I could think of. I would have to keep the Hip thing a secret until we reached our destination.

I would also like to say it's great that this thread didn't get plugged up with a bunch of stupidity.
