depends on the sound/tone you like. sg has humbucker pickups, my preference.....thicker sound. strats are nice with their singles, depending on the amp. not a hater, just my preference. mikes my fav and he goes away from these pickups. what guitars do you have, what style of music do you play?

I'm not a fan at all of the SG,... now if he would just bust out the black Schecter I would be happy
I thought you were talking about Stone Gossard for a sec, I don't know why, but yeh. ha... not much of a guitar expert.. I want a telecaster though.. Anyone recommend it?? I'm pretty sure that's the one they use in RVM..
Now this isn't hard and fast and always changes guitars on different songs, like he used to use an Epiphone for a while on Present Tense, but lately I think he's playing Rickenbaker. And obviously there have been overlaps. But I like the Tele sound. Ed's best guitar tone is thin but sets his knobs that as he strums it starts to distort. The 2000 sound was way to spit and polish... too synthetic for my taste.

i'm gonna get a tele next too i think. i like my les paul standard but it's only an epiphone. the cool thing is though that it's a set neck, not bolt on. so all i gotta do is swap out the pickups for '57s and it'll sound golden. i need a new amp too in addition to my mesa boogie rectifier. i want a hi-watt. a nice combo of classic and modern sounds. and eventually ya gotta get a 59 sunburst strat standard.

a whole lot of guitar talk that I don't really get... but do you play in a band or just noodle around?

Man that rickenbaker that ed used on the letterman show was sweet, its sooo big! Its pretty rare for any pearl jammer to rock a rickenbaker, no?

i wasnt a fan of the sg myself, the tone was way to metallic for me i guess. the telecasters he uses now are a bit of an improvement with more bite to them, but i still havent really liked his guitar tone the last few years. way to "boxy" sounding, if that makes any sense.
and this is a little off topic, but anyone else think mike has his treble set too high this tour? i couldnt hear him very well at the albany show, and even on the boot, it sounds like static when he's playing chords. soloing it sounds ok, a bit low in the mix maybe. anyone else notcied this?

im glad he stopped using them. his guitar tone was so fucking shit in 2003, that you think stone or mike would have had a word with him - it literally ruins loads of songs on that tour - insignificance was shit at every show, betterman often sounded muddy - immortality sounded shit and muddy. terrible tone. the schecter had higher output pickups than the sg and hence the amp broke up better, giving that lovely crunchy tone. i like his tone in 2000 alot.

The sound at the Albany show was poor. I saw them the next night in CT and he sounded good. I'm not so sure if had to work out the bugs on the sound or it was the arena, but his guitar sounded like shit...
Ed also dumped his Hiwatt and & head. If you look behind him on the stage, he has 3 small amps tilted back where his monitors used to be... I wonder what they are????

Just swapping thte pickups will not make it a Jimmy Page sounding guitar.
even though it is a set neck, it is not a long tennon. the long tennon makes a huge difference in tone because it transfers the vibrations to the body and tone wood top better. The unfortunate thing is that you need to buy a historic Gibson to get the long tennon these days, they used to be standard in the 50's.
and wether you like it or not, the wood used in epis usually are not that good in comparison to gibsons.
that said, there are many good epis out there, each one is a different beast, hopefully you got a good one!
