I've been reading up on the PJ's origins and from what I gather, Irons had a pre-existing relationship w/EV but not the rest of the band when they gave Irons their demos. Right?
Eddie and Jack played basketball together on a regular or semi-regular basis around 1989/1990.
Stone and Jeff had been playing together for years and they had begun working with Mcready following Mother Love Bone. Aside from the three of them, the would be band had no drummer and no singer. Matt Cameron was helping them put together demos but he had a full time job with Soundgarden.
Jack Irons was approached about being the drummer and was given the demo tape. Not really sure where the connection was there but none of the information out there indicates that Jack was close to those guys. He lived in Southern California and they lived in Seattle.
Jack did not pursue the project (he was already in the band Eleven) but passed the demo along to Eddie telling him something to the effect of "this band needs a singer".

he was THE original peppers drummers, they found eacht other on high school. Jack, Anthony, Hillel and Flea they jammed recorded a demo and got signed. But Jack and Hillel left the band to join another project (what is this, feat. ALain Johannes and Natascha Schneider!!!). So the remaining two recorded the first chill record without them. But Hillel again joined the band for the second record, and Jackie for their third (uplift mofo...). Sadly, hillel past out, and jack couldn't deal with that. So anthony and flea were again left alone but soon found some guy named frusciante and a badass drummer called chad smith.
Meanwhile, Jack returned to LA where he joined Joe Strummer for the most 1989/1990. And in that occasion he met ed (being a strummer fan backstage) they become good friends.
Stone and Jeff were looking for a drummer cause Matt was to busy with Soundgarden so they asked Jack Irons (MLB played some gigs with the peppers sometime probably, anyhow the wanted him for the band). So yes, Jack refused cause he rejoined Johannes/Schneider for their new band Eleven, but he had a friend who could sing some tunes, the rest is history

I just finished reading Kiedis' book Scar Tissue and it mentions how Eddie apparently worked a few RHCP as a stagehand/equiptment mover. The book mentions the nice relationship they have had w/ PJ over the years. I would murder my first born to have been to one of those early shows where RHCP, PJ, and Nirvana were on the same bill.
