Has anyone here ever seriously tried to get signed by a record label? Which would you recommend for an upstart indie band? Any suggestions that would make this whole damn process less discouraging and easier?
My old band "Asia Minor" was signed to Anomer Records. But then the label collapsed into bankrupcy and the band disbanded.
Indie lables typicaly only sign one type of band (per lable). Relapse signs hardcore, Victory signs screamo...ect. Do some research to find some indie bands (or discribe yourself to me) then work dilligently to make those lables aware of your band.

Hey, thanks a lot for the advice man. I guess you could call us indie. We'll be getting some demos done this weekend, and if you'd like me to send them to you, just PM me. We're currently searching for a singer though.

get a manager or someone who can whore your demo in the proper direction.
otherwise, do some serious homework on local labels and their genres. call/email/drop by...whatever it takes to get 5 mins with someone.
I've been doing a lot of research on every label I can find right now. How would we go about getting a manager? We're really new to the whole... trying to get a record deal thing.

I'd work on getting a singer before you worry about a manager. Unless the manager can sing.

If you get to know me well enough, you'll find that I handle everything at once, rather than in a logical chronological sequence.

the best way to seriously try to get signed by a label is to not seriously try to get signed by a label....
keep playing shows....that's where anybody who's anybody will show up
if you have talent the reps will see it and they will approach you
so keep playing live anywhere and everywhere
I agree with that. Best way to get any kind of record deal is to play A LOT, get a lot of word of mouth, get noticed. So the first thing for you should focus on is to get a singer and the right singer for your music.

Atleast you no longer go by "Soul Patch"

That reminds me of the time I put a picture of James Brown on our website and claimed it to be our logo ...
anyway, screw getting signed to anything. make your own label. Bad Religion did it like 25 years ago and they're still cool.
(although they did go through a period of about five years when they weren't very cool)

Send your demo to Jack Irons, maybe he knows somebody
