Phil Anselmo Retiring?

MTV reports: In response to the killing of Dimebag Darrell, ex-Pantera singer Phil Anselmo has issued a rambling, emotional statement saying he's devastated by what happened, and calling the slain guitarist "the most beautiful person, one of my best friends in

"I love Dimebag Darrell because there was not one motherfucker like him," he said. "I love him like a brother loves a brother."

...Anselmo planned to attend Darrell's public memorial service Tuesday night in Arlington, Texas, but was told that Darrell's family didn't want him to attend (see "Thousands Gather To Mourn Dimebag Darrell"). "I never got a chance to say goodbye in the right way and it kills me," he said. "I wish to God I could've gone to his funeral, but I have to respect his family's wishes, and they do not want me there. I believe I belong there, but I understand completely, I'm so sorry."

Not only did Darrell's death dash the hopes of a Pantera reunion, Anselmo said the incident has made him question his own career as a musician. "This has changed the entire world, and this is the last you'll be seeing of me for a long time," he said. "I hope you're happy, heavy metal music magazines, media, I hope you're happy. I'm done." Well, he can blame the heavy metal media all he wants, but I don't think they published anything that didn't come straight from his mouth.

That said, I feel really sorry for the guy. I'm sure he's hurting really bad, and despite the "Pantera feud," I'm certain that he loved Dime and never would have thought things would end like this. As far as his retiring, I'm thinking that music will end up being what gets him through this tough time. Whether that means we'll see him around again, I don't know.

I don't know the whole situation, but not to invite a guy you thrashed with in one of the biggest metal bands ever for over 10 years to the funeral is not good

He was quoted like this in the latest issue of Metal Hammer :

"Dimebag deserves to be beaten severly"

And he goes on to say some not exactly flattering things about Dimebag and his brother.

There's been back and forth bashing ever since Down got back together for their second album. I think most of it was coming from Phil's side. No one's mentioned Rex in all of this. I wonder if he was there, or if he had said anything since Pantera's demise.

The kind words countered comments Anselmo made through the media before Darrell's death. In the cover story of the latest issue of the English magazine Metal Hammer, Anselmo, in an interview conducted long before Darrell's death, called the guitarist "a "shallow, stupid man," and added "he deserves to be beaten severely."

The singer's comments were in response to Darrell's implications that Anselmo was on heroin, and that his singing was suffering as a result. "He would attack me, vocally," Anselmo said in the article. "And just knowing that he was so much smaller than me, I could kill him like a f---in' piece of vapor, you know, he would turn into vapor."

This might have something to do with it.

Dime's parents requested that Phil not attend, he wanted to go but he respected their wishes anyway.

Anselmo has a lot of deep personal issues, I think we can all admit this. So I can only see him taking him some "Phil time" to be to his benefit. I hope he straightens out and checks himself into a drug/alcohol rehab. But I'd bet a pretty penny he will be back making music in 5-10 years. Assuming he can conquer his own demons I wouldn't doubt seeing him putting out solo albums in his older ages.

I understand Dimebag's family's position, based on what Phil's said, but I understand Phil's as well.

First off, Phil had the right to be pissed at Dime. It's fucked up to talk about people's personal/drgu problems in public.

Regardless, they were two friends that worked with each other for years and, despite the differences between them, undoubtedly cared about each other. I do feel bad for Phil in this situation.

I can only imagine how much this is eating Anselmo, someone who has proven to be one of the most unstable vocalists of our generation. That he never had the opportunity to reconcile his differences with a person he obviously respected deeply is going to become the greatest struggle he has ever faced.

Sounds like it's time for the serious drug abuse.

This droopy eyed, slurring words Phil that we have seen of late will soon be replaced by collapsey vein soiled underwear stinky corpse Phil.

This will not end well... unless you're his dealer $$
