Haha...here's another discussion we had last night.

Would you rather...
A) Be swimming in the ocean and realize that there is a shark about 20 feet away from you, or
B) Be in the middle of the woods with nothing on you and realize there is a bear about 20 feet away from you?

In both situations, you have made direct eye contact with the animal.

Definitely bear. There is a remote chance to climb a tree or find a big stick to hit him with. Shark is no escape.

Bear. You at least have a chance.

The shark could bite you in half.

the shark..a shark doesnt attack humans for prey..the only way he would go after you is if he mistaked you for a seal, or he was swimming in your direction with his mouth open and he brushed against you (this is the case of like 99% of shark attacks)..if he does come after you..which is about as rare as you winning the lottery, punch him in the face..more specifically the eye..its real sensitive on a shark and will swim away..altho its tough to wind up underwwater..but still i like my odds with the shark..

Bear, even though I am a really fast swimmer, in the woods there's always a tree to climb nearby.

You hear this all the time, but do you really think anyone will think to punch a shark in the face as he swims towards you? I'd prolly die of shock before he bit me. I'd definately take my chance with the bear.

i'd definitely take the bear. sharks are way scarier, and besides I suck at swimming. in addition, I feel like there's more in the woods that could distract the bear, and more hiding places.

You guys that are climbing trees to escape bears are crazy.

I would just lay down and pretend i'm dead. That always works in cartoons.

In case of bear attack
The best way to avoid injury from a bear attack is to avoid being attacked. If you see a bear, leave it alone and leave the area. Do not disturb or approach it.

However, if the bear advances upon you, it can be difficult to evade. Bears can run much faster than humans. Running will trigger the bear's instinct to chase. Most charges are false threats, so the best way to avoid or halt a charge is to hold your ground and make yourself look as big as possible. If attacked curl into the fetal position and protect the head. When the bear has finished batting you around and mauling you, contact the US Forest Service.

Some travelers in bear country carry pepper spray or large caliber firearms to repel or kill an attacking bear. Grizzly bear cubs are excellent tree climbers, but after one year of age, grizzlies do not climb trees, and climbing a tree is the best defense if flight is not an option. Note that black bears (much smaller than grizzlies) are very good tree climbers, and climbing a tree to avoid a black bear should never be attempted.

A frequent reason for a sow to attack a human is that the sow thinks the human is threatening its cubs. In this case, the sow will attack to disable the threat and then typically leave. Laying very still and feigning death has preserved the lives of people caught in such a situation. Hungry or ill bears may attack humans for other reasons and should be expected to behave differently.

I find that part hysterical.
