i searched for a thread a while back and didn't see one. apologies if my searching skills are lacking.
if you've thought the show cheesy, lame, absurd - a colonel and a subordinant lusting after each other (puke) or filled with cosmic giddiness (o'neil being dumber then a doorknob), then you have to watch the first three episodes of season 9 which are going to be shown 12-3 on Sci-Fi this monday 1/2/06.
not only is it not cheesy, it's powerfully dramatic in a way the show has been only upon occasion, and yet it still maintains its comic elements. the acting is extraordinary, the sets gorgeous, the music reminicent of howard shore, and the concept and script are brilliant.
i can't promise the show maintains this level of quality throughout the season. it's the most frustrating show i've ever watched because of its consistently missed potential, but if you watch these 3 episodes you will be delighted. they are really one 3 hour (if you include commercials) episode with a centerpiece you would not expect to see on a show like this.
you don't need to have kept up with the show in order to understand what's going on, assuming you know the basic premise, as the story is new. if not, just ask and i'll write a synopsis.

I watch an episode every now and again. It's OK. Although I prefer watching Battlestar, which frankly, is the best show I've ever seen. Sci-fi or otherwise.

what i have seen of battlestar is quite good. since i have it on dvd, i may get around to watching it. i've heard this year is not as good as the first, but that was early this season. i've heard better things in the last month it was on.
best sci fi ever? i'd be surprised if anything surpasses B5. from a literary and dramatic perspective - television or otherwise - that would be very tough to top.

Big Bump:
I must say that I never watched a single episode until about a month ago because a co-worker has all the dvd's and won't shut up about this show. I tried season 1 and it was okay but then season 2 was great as well as season 3. I will be starting season 4 tonight and I am adicted. I just hope I can make it through all 9 seasons by the time season 10 starts in July "I Think".
After I get caught up I will be giving Battlestar a try, I hear its great.

My aunt used to love this show, but only watches the first few seasons. She hates it now.
I'd catch it occasionally, when it was on before Farscape (which I was obsessed with) but ever ep seemed exactly the damn same. (Someone's in the hospital! OMG, they're going to DIEEEE! then at 8:57, Nevermind, they're better!!)
I've watched a couple of the last season or so, only if I knew Claudia Black was going to be on. I tried to get into it, but basically I'd just tune out until I heard Ben Browder or Claudia. ;p I was glad Ben got another gig, but they really underuse him from what I've seen, and they don't let him act much other than 'okay, get beat up and make nippy comments'. Sigh.

that's what happened to me, only it happened during season 7. oh man, i was so addicted. i'm in recovery now.
i think.
i found much of season 9 to be really annoying. i can't stand mitchell.

oh god. that character is just awful. i have no idea why the fuck they hired him.
no one would have a rookie lead an sg team, to say nothing of the premier team which has the most valuable individuals in the entire sgc on it. the stupidity of the concept is stupifying. LOL
the actors got so fed up with it, that one cursed him after a particularly stupid scene. there's no sound but you can certainly lip read it.
i wish they would just stop or kill him off or something. ack.
but claudia black is awesome. i watched farscape and i liked them both but after watching season 9 and going back and watching farscape, it's clear to me she's making him better than he actually is. browder is one of the most overrated actors on tv.
and he's not underused. he's had a ton of time on screen and more background has been given to him in one season then any of the other characters in 8 years.
oh well. i'm giving it another season but i may not watch them all. if spoilers are anything to go by, some of these are going to be just dreadful.

LOL. I don't watch it enough to have a real opinion, but I do agree that the character they gave him to work with suuucks. I don't know who's fault it is - the writers, who wanted him to still be Crichton but also replace that other guy, yadda yadda yadda. Everything i ever saw just seemed to be a watered down version of Crichton.
But I loved Claudia's part, it was fun to see her as someone with such a different personality than Aeryn's.

SHE'S AWESOME
you know what I think? I think they should have ditched the series after the 5th episode and had Jackson go after her, save her, and the show be all about their lives where ever they were.
The hell with the rest of it. Those first 5 episodes were better then anything they've done in years.... ok well, the last 5 episodes of season 8 were really outstanding but that pretty much just rolled into season 9's beginning. I guess one could say the 10 episode stretch from season 8 through epi 5 of season 9 were among the best the show's ever put out.
And it's not because of the ratings.
And it sure the fuck isn't because of the quality.
Basically, as TV guide put it, it's just because. Just because? WTF?!
Assholes. And not only did they do this, but they won't let new episodes of SG1 air on any other network in the USA. It's brinksmanship.
You (MGM) lower your costs and we'll renew the show.
Fuck 'em! I hope this ends up being the first major TV show to go fully to the net. In the meantime, I've joined the campaign to get my views across. If you like quality science fiction that asks serious questions about the freedom to worship and what it means to be human, what makes a good person and what prices we pay to be true, then help us out and write to the Sci Fi network.

There's a place to write your letter and all you do is fill out the online form and our volunteers will mail it as appropriate. You can also use one of the templates if you don't feel particularly creative right now.
If you don't want to do that, send a few dollars for postage so we can mail other people's letters. We're aiming to get full page advertisements in Variety etc., so money is needed.

You can write to MGM to show support. I subscribed to download the series on iTunes and i hate iTunes because of the DRM.
The show has hit its stride this year with the new cast and the central theme involving religious worship. It takes balls to take on religion. You got to hand them that.

I just got into this show this year. I watched all 8 seasons on DVD and was awaiting season 9 on dvd and was recording all new episodes. This truly sucks. Although I just finished the first season of Atlantis on DVD which was great. I love the cast and the writing is even better than SG-1.

The first episodes of season 9 are very surprising. They are the best episodes the show put on since... the first season? Hell, I don't think they ever did anything like the second one. Writing and plot wise, "There But For The Grace Of God" from season 1 comes close. But it took real guts to start the story line they're running with now, and it starts with that 3 parter.
All hail the Ori.
In season 8, SG1 had no money until Reckoning 1 & 2. Prior to that their effects were people looking at light flashing, but never showing what they were observing. It made me laugh at times and they had no money to send people through the gate.
All the money went to Atlantis. I about fell out of my chair in astonishment at the effects on Atlantis compared to SG1.
Atlantis is ok, but it doesn't have the mythical depth of its predessor. It had the advantage of money in it's first seasons compared to SG1, but SG1's basic premise is the great hook and it has the advantage of having an epic character, something lacking on Atlantis. There aren't many shows with something like that at its core.
I'm afraid Atlantis won't last without its predessor. It will last one more year unless they renew SG1. 4 years is the pitch for syndication and that's what it will have.
