Such a great biography, very thorough and complete. Took into account every aspect of his personality and nearly all his idealogies. Denzel Washington gave one of the best performances I've ever seen and made the whole thing look easy. Great, great film. Soundtrack could have used some work though.

Loved the movie, Denzel is dead on in this role.
The ending with the kids standing up and saying "I am Malcolm X" gives me douche chills for some reason, I have to turn it off, don't know why but it seems embarrassing.

In total agreement. I hate this kind of force-feeding.

Agreed on the ending. But otherwise, the movie is amazing once it gets past the hour mark. I have to defend one piece of the music though, the scene where Malcolm is riding in the car on the way to his last speech and 'A Change Is Gonna Come' from Sam Cooke is playing, scene brings me to tears everytime I watch it. Not just because of the music but because if you've seen the movie before, you can see in Denzel's eyes (as Malcolm) that he is gonna die.

i agree, that's probably my second favorite music scene, the first being billie holiday singing "i cover the waterfront" as malcolm x is taken out of the club by archie. overall, i thought the musical selections couldve been better but this movie is still an amazing piece of work. top 5 biography easily imo.

I saw this film years ago when I was just a foolish little kid. I need to see this now that I'm a foolish adult.
The scene of Malcolm X getting gunned down during a speech has stayed with me through the years, in fact, it was the first image I had in my mind when I saw this thread title.

Good movie, but not great. IMO Denzel should have won the Oscar for Best Actor that year (apologies to Al Pacino). What I like about the movie is how faithful it stayed to his autobiography; what I disliked is some of Lee's direction and his obvious agenda. The last scene with the African school children is ridiculous.

I don't get the hate for that last scene. Spike Lee had an opportunity to put Nelson Mandela in the movie and he took it. It's not a life altering scene, nor is it all that good, but it's Nelson Mandela, man.

My point exactly. The scene is only in the movie because it's Nelson Mandela. If it were just a random unknown actor, it would have ended up on the cutting room floor. Part of Lee's agenda.
