Maybe it's because I'm listening to the avo album a lot laely, but I honestly think the new record is their best on over all recording quality. It's clean, it's even, it sounds good on any system. If not Avo, then I'd say Vs is the best recording?
Here's my list: best -to- not so good (based only on recording quality)
1. Avo Album
2. Vs.
3. Yield
4. Vitalogy
5. Binaural
6. Riot Act
7. Ten
8. No Code

vs.? you're crazy.
binaural is the best produced.

Vitalogy and No Code are the two that really have personality, where the production is bent to fit the music being made. So I like those two the best.
The new one is pretty damn good, but I don't know for sure how I feel yet.
Riot Act had decent-enough sound quality, but not a lot of personality.
Binaural had some of the best and a lot of the worst. Depended on the song, sadly.
Vs is actually awesome. It's like London Calling for 1993....clean, straightforward, guitar-based mixing, not a lot of overdubs....awesome.
Ten sucks, no matter how you slice it. The production, I mean. Even without the reverb, it's just too generic. The band needed more time to learn who they were, before they would have much in the way of direction.

Vs, Yield, and No Code stick out as the best. Binaural and Riot Act seem to be the weakest. The best production on Binaural was on the songs that didn't make the album.

I totally agree! I put no code last because it's really a noisy/hissy recording I think. I mean think if hail, hail had the production of the new record?
As far as personality, where the production is bent to fit the music...vitalogy for sure, but I think binaural would be the other with that feel.
The last two are IMHO the best sounding, Adam Kasper does a great job. If you are in doubt about Riot Act just listen to the drums on Save You to give an example, other is Thumbing My Way the sound is incredibly clean.

I think I'd go with Vs./Yield as one and two. I thnk I'd put vitalogy third. Binaural can be tough to listen to but that was intentional. Avocado is very solid, much more so than Riot Act, which feels a bit flat and lifeless. I have the same problem with the No code production. And Ten is Ten.

with ten being ahead of any of the albums, vs. being first, and no code being last.

Vs. and Yield were close. I think Yield has more personality, but Vs. is ultimatley a bit cleaner. Ten's production was good for what it was. I love those songs so much more than riot act and no code that it's hard for me to tell.
No Code always felt a little flat to me. I don't think I'm the only one in this thread to put it at the bottom.

Yield is without a doubt the best-produced. No Code is close, but a few of the songs are a little off (the bass in Sometimes is too far in the mix IMO). Pearl Jam is good, but it ranks in the middle for me.

I've always disliked No Code's production. To me, the album seemed like it was half finished. And no other album sounds so much better live compared to the album than No Code (ie, Red Mosquito).

No Code's production isn't techinically perfect and clean, but it suits the songs and vibe to a tee. That's really the point of ANY production, so that earns it pretty awesome points in my book...
1) Vitalogy
2) No Code
3) Yield
4) Avocado
5) Riot Act
6) Vs
7) Binaural
Ten
The first three are definitely pretty much tied for aural goodness. I think the production is great on RA and Avo', even if I don't love the songs as much as the earlier records (which is why 1, 2 & 3 edge them out). Vs is just a solid, well recorded rock album...Binaural can get a bit grating to listen to, I like the idea but I think the mix could've been done better...and Ten is Ten.

I think Yield is the cleanest album, but I think that is my biggest problem with the album. The production and the band are too clean in spots. It gets boring. It's like the anti-vitalogy. There are gritty songs on it -- DTE and BofJ. It's not dirty enough. I like it when PJ is dirty.
