Thank God for this thread, I don't know why I havent started one before now. My favourite book is 3&4. It used to just be 3 but since re reading the books a few months ago I just fell in love with 4. I liked the 3rd movie the best so far even though they strayed away from the book alot.
Question for the die hards. The name of the new book will be Harry Potter and The Half Blood Prince, who do you think the Half Blood Prince will be? JK has already said that its not Harry, Voldermort, or Hagrid.

Have you read the books? Do that and you'll instantly be a convert. The movies are great adaptations, but as usual, the books blow them out of the water. The nice thing is, you can easily breeze through the first few in a couple days.

I've always wondered, has anyone encountered someone who's read the books and not found them enjoyable at the very least? The only people I've ever found that mock Harry Potter are those who haven't read it. I've talked to a couple people that didn't immediately become obsessed, but they still appreciated it as a good story.

i haven't read them. i used to be one of those people who just hated harry potter on general principle- you know the type- lord of the rings fans who quietly look down their noses at these people dressing up like wizards and buying the newest edition of harry potter from the milk bar at 3am? then i actually watched the first movie and decided that i did like it after all, though i'll never be one of those obsessives. what can i say, professor snape hooked me. i'll rent the third today and if i like that, then i'll contemplate the books.

I have yet to read any of the Harry Potter books, but have finally decided maybe I should. I would appreciate some thoughts on why I should definitely begin to read the books.
I have been reading a lot of Stephen King the past few years and maybe it is time for variety.
Thanks.

I love Harry Potter...I actually read the last one at the same time as As I Lay Dying and a great bio on George Washington. I am blown away by the way people are divided by this series...a lot of literature lovers are, I think, irritated that this series outsells their favorite books by the millions. But if you only pay attention to the power of the written word, then the first two HP books are childish and boring and after that it gets amazing...it is mostly entertainment, and probably a bit lowbrow for the times, but so were the Canterbury Tales. So deal.

Apparently 2 characters die in the next one.

Part of what I love about Rowling is that she is purely basing her writing style on the intended audience. The first books were extremely basic, and written for children. I wouldn't call them boring, but they weren't aimed at adults. She has ventured from that. As her original core audience has aged, she's aged the writing. That's one of the most impressive things about the series.
Voldemoort dies in the last book, I'm sure of it. I'm not sure she's referring to him when she states 2 "main" characters die. I still believe Snape will die sacrificing himself to save Harry, thus confirming Dumbledore's belief he was good.
my favorite book is 4, but i dont think the movie did it much justice. my favorite movie is number 3, you cant go wrong with gary oldman and alan rickman in the same movie. you just cant. plus, the movie itself had such a distinct and forboding style that the other 3 seemed to be lacking.
My friend is trying to convince me to start the Lord of the Rings trilogy before I begin on the Harry Potter books.
I am not usually one for fantasy in books, so I am trying to decide which way to go.
any thoughts?
I would go with Potter first. The Rings books are great, but not for everyone....and you could probably read the entire Potter series on the can during the next week and a half.

Thanks. Why are the Potter books such a quick read?
