Sex Shop Should Reopen

ROBINSON TWP. - Vanessa Fuchs is having a celebration, one that will probably require a cake baked in a penis-shaped pan.

Allegheny County Judge Joseph M. James ruled Thursday in favor of Fuchs' business, the Sassy Sensations sex toy boutique, in its appeal of a Robinson Township Zoning Hearing Board decision that forced the store to close.

A bubbly, happy Fuchs said she hopes to reopen the store by the second week of July.

"I'm not going to let any grass grow under my feet," she said. "It's just so great that this decision was reversed."

Fuchs said she's been paying rent and utilities on the store, located in a Steubenville Pike plaza, since it first opened in September. She said she had a verbal OK to open the store, but township zoning officer Rick Urbano shut down Sassy Sensations shortly after it opened, saying it violated the township's ordinance against sexually oriented businesses.

In reversing the decision, James said the township did not follow the rules of its own ordinance. It defines nine types of restricted sexually oriented businesses, including adult arcade, adult bookstore, adult motel, adult theater, escort agency and sexual encounter center.

But the zoning hearing board never specified where Sassy Sensations fell among the categories, and none of the nine categories defines Sassy Sensations' business, the judge wrote.

Fuchs owns a similar store in Castle Shannon, also called Sassy Sensations, and also holds in-home sex-toy parties, both of which are mostly patronized by women. Merchandise includes lingerie, massage oils, sex toys and supplies for bachelorette parties, including penis-shaped cake pans.

Urbano said Thursday he had heard of the decision, but had not seen a copy and did not know whether the township planned to appeal. Township Manager Richard Charnovich could not be reached for comment.

Fuchs is the german word for fox, and its not a hard c sound like in "fuck".

This state drives me crazy sometimes...
