basically, he read the declaration of independence, using it as proof we live in a christian nation because it includes the word 'god' and said the writer, thomas jefferson, was a bible-fearing man.

Meh, I honestly think a big reason why is the country is so frickin large. It is easy to live in a part of the country with few smart people in it.
