he's an amazing writer and their records are pretty good but I've never been blown away by them.

Lets not shit ourselves is probably my favorite song of his.

I've seen him live a few times. When he played with M Ward and Jim James of My Morning Jacket it was a spiritual experience. Letting Off The Happiness is an amazing album.

I live in Omaha, and have done a lot of playing with local musicians...especially off Saddle Creek Road. I've never played with Oberst, but I know a few of his friends and have met him a few times.

was pretty down to earth/nice the times i chatted w/ him

*shrug*

used to absolutely loathe his voice, still think it could be way better, but he's a super talented songwriter irregardless.

"super talented"? overstatement of the century. He's better than decent. On a scale from 1-10 he'd be a 6.

9.5? Are you fucking kidding? I sure hope so. Damn you have low standards.

The way he writes and the voice of his poetry is worth a 9.5 alone

lyrically he's about an 8-8.5 compared to his contemporaries
compared to say Dylan (a 10), he's more like a 6.5-7, yes

his lyrics are damn good. i think melodically he sucks though- the same thing over and over and kinda boring. digital ash showed that- it was like his songs with a drum track and seemed really out of place. i love "waste of paint" because its another societal-judgement rant song, then in a measure of great humility and introspection near the end of the song he turns his focus to himself and takes back his projection and owns that he's no better than anyone else.

This made me like him a bit and took away some of the pretense.
