i'm SO CURIOUS about the 10-15 songs we DIDN'T hear from the Avocado sessions--what did they sound like and where would/could they have fit in with the rest of the cd
it's been said countless places, but the 1st half of Avocado FAR outshines the 2nd half, in large part because of consistency.
IMO the transition from Parachutes to Unemployable onward don't make sense. IMO i like a cd that changes pace and transitions very smoothly with continuity (on my iTunes, I put severed hand AFTER parachutes, took of Wasted Reprise, and its sum effect is a considerablly smoother cd, still with problems but better)
and i think NO CODE suffers the EXACT same problem--side a vs side b. not enough cohesiveness.
YIELD AND TEN feel PERFECT to me, and even Riot Act, if only I liked the majority of the songs on it.
track arrangement and selection plauged Binaural too. I standby this: Binaural is their best album if the tracklisting is something along the lines of:
1. Of the Girl
2. Insignificance
3. Evacuation
4. Sad
5. Rival (with the snorting omitted--via iTunes chopping)
6. Grievance
7. Light Years
8. Nothing as it Seems
9. Fatal
10. Other Side (first written during these sessions)
11. Sleight of Hand
12. Parting Ways (with Soon Forget as a secret song)
(you can create the illusion of this cd if you chop the keys of the typewriter off and then make Soon Forget track 13)
the songs most people dislike from this cd are much more approachable if surrounded by certain songs.

First 5 songs from avocado are GREAT!
Come Back is good
The rest are ok
Inside Job sucks.
Avo doesn't get going until Comatose hits, but thaqt's more because the first two aren't that great than any flaw of tracklisting, WWS is somehow enhanced coming after LW actually.
I'd say the tracklisting on Avocado is pretty good. Inside Job is perfectly placed, although it wouldn't be if it weren't for the little guitar outro afterward.

1. Severed Hand
2. WWS
3. Comatose
4. Life Wasted
5. Big Wave
6. Unemployable
7. Gone
8. Life Wasted Reprise
9. Parachutes
10. Army Reserve
11. Markers in the Sand
12. Come Back
13. Inside Job (which does not suck btw)
This should have been Avacado's order if ya ask me... Severed Hands intro should make it the first song by default alone Not sure if it would work on Vinyl though? Im guessing Gone for the closer of side A on vinyl with my order... but ive never checked the times to see if it fits.

DAMN
that TOTALLY CHANGES THE CD, and makes the album sustainable start to finish

i agree, mits would fit so perfect on side b with wasted reprise starting it off. don't you miss the flow of a 2 sided tape or vinyl album?

I like the rearranged traklisting better.
I remember that I also did something similar a while ago to Binaural. I really think the lost dogs tracks add to the whole of the album.
Yield doesn't really need a tracklist adjustment, although side two is so much weaker than side one. It flows well.
Any Binaural tracklist that doesn't start with Of the Girl and end with Fatal is unacceptable.
Riot Act should be a powerful 11 or 12 track record that starts dark, doomed, and pessimistic and rises up to hopefullness and determination over the course of about 40 minutes.
Pearl Jam is the first record since No Code that I wouldn't change the tracklisting on at all. Just like No Code (and Vitalogy), this tracklist was very well thought out in terms of what they wanted to accomplish. In this case, it seems to be a series of narratives that overlap or connect to each other. Plus, like Riot Act should have, it ends hopefully.

Binaural (not thinking about Vinyl / 2 sides at all on this one)
Of the Girl
Breakerfall
Gods Dice
Evacuation
Thin Air
Light Years
Nothing As It Seems
Sleight of Hand
Insignificance
Grievance
Sad
Rival
Fatal
Parting Ways
(Soon Forget hidden, I like that idea)
Thats the order I used when i burned a "Live Binaural" disc anyway... the only real bad spot is Evacuation to Thin Air... I tried it with the Insig/Grievance/Sad triple shot between the two, and it flowed better... but then you had all the fast songs right away, and all the mellow at the end... so i liked this a lil bit more...

When I'm feeling ambitious enough I'm going to attempt to listen to all the albums in some resequenced manner. I'd really like to see people's ideas of what their ideal albums would look like. I know there's a thread for each, so I'll sift through all of that fun stuff to come to my own conclusions. My first move would be to chop Around The Bend and close No Code (which happens to be my favorite album) with Present Tense: a scenario they tested out.

It's funny... when I listen to Avocado in its normal order, I find this album to be very short and I always feel a bit frustrated when it ends. With this order it seems longer, I can't explain but I like that

i think PJ does a pretty good job with their track sequences, if i were to find any faults on any of their albums, the sequence of track listings would be the last on my list.

the problem on some of the records (binaural and riot act are the obvious offenders here) is less the order of the tracks and more what was left off
McParadigm--I like your 11 song short riot act moving from depression to hope.

I know. I'm very curious about these songs also. What I think is interesting is that Binaural was one of the only other albums we got zero b-sides for, and all the b-sides (save for Sweet Lew) are better than the majority of the songs on the album. What if the same is true of PEARL JAM? I love this album so much, but I get chills when I think of how great the leftovers could really be. Here's to hoping we get some b-sides some day.

I've always wanted to resquence No Code to make it wierder...include Dead Man and Happy When I'm Crying, maybe. That's a great record as it is, though.

FYI, binaural is my favorite album, i think it's perfect aside from maybe one minute in Evacuation.
Riot Act on the other hand, i could see some other songs being selected for the album that would make it better, but it's still the merits of the songs on their own that makes it less than other albums
