I picked up a Genesis about a month ago from a co-worker for 10 bucks. I finally plugged it in last night and was playing the hell out of the original Sonic. I haven't played any Genesis games for years and am looking to pick some up used, especially classics that I may have missed. What are some I should pick up?

What I'm already going to get:

Sonic 2
NHL 94
FIFA 95
Golden Axe
NBA Jam: Tournament Edition
Streets of Rage 1 or 2 (which one is better, can't remember?)
Mortal Kombat 2
Street Fighter 2
Castlevania: Bloodlines (I've never played, but heard it's great)

What else am I missing? I've never played an RPG on Genesis, so I'm looking for something in there...not sure what else?

The second is better -- good gameplay and great bosses.

I never actually owned one, but I played it a lot. Kid Chameleon, Sonic 2, Phantasy Star 2, Alladin, and Herzog Zwei were my favorites. Also Madden and NHL but I cannot remember the years.

Yeah it was awesome how you could move the little cursor and pick which of the receivers shoulders to throw to.

Streetfighter II is by far the best game though. I can't lose with Blanca.

That mutant league football was great, especially when you played with the option that kept players that died on the field from coming back. By the time the second half rolled around you'dl have four players on the field.

Shining Force 1 or 2

Phantasy Star 4 is not bad either

Landstalker

Seriously, it's the best RPG on the system. Even better than Shining Force 2, which was a doozy. Other must have Genesis RPGs are Soleil (rip off of Zelda but still good) and the Story of Thor (a simply immense game. Close to Landstalker [ie perfection])

I'd also suggest:

Flashback (stunning game)
Sonic 3 and Sonic and Knuckles add on (much better than Sonic 2, IMO)
Comix Zone (nice beat-up with a comic style)
Rocket Knight Adventures (enjoyable platformer)
Moonwalker (and why not? Nice soundtrack ;))
Revenge of Shinobi (the original and the best. But fucking hard! :))
Earthworm Jim 1 and 2 (classics)
Gunstar Heroes (shoot-em-up platformer by Treasure, which means great graphics)
Dynamite Headdy (from the same company. platformer with some puppet shit going on)
Toejam and Earl (1 or 2. Two quite different games, but still sterling work)

All of those games are perhaps the best I've ever played. Hope that helps!

Ahhhh fuck, and Kid Chamelon and Ecco the Dolphin (the original swim-em-up ;))

Doubtless I'll think of more later and kick myself. :)

Also, if you're wanting to go for a retro Genesis feel, I'd advise Altered Beast (homoeroticism ahoy!), The Legend of Toki (one hit kills - argh!) and Ghouls and Ghosts.

If it weren't for Tecmo Super Bowl, this might be a contender for the greatest sports game ever.

playing it now, yeah it really does blow. There is no traction at all. But I loved it as a kid.

Damn. Somebody already mentioned Gunstar Heroes and General Chaos  Easily the best games on the system. General Chaos four player is a hoot.

Games others didn't mention:

Bonanza Bros.
Beyond Oasis
Thunder Force 3

Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine (the only version of PuyoPuyo in the US, I believe. best versus puzzle game of all-time)

Comix Zone (I haven't played this since I was a kid, but I remember the concept was real cool)
Chakan the forever man
Altered Beast
Ghouls'n' Ghosts
Micro Machines 2
Strider
Side Pocket
X-Men 1 &2 (were cool as far as I remember)
Vectorman
Zombies Ate my Neighbors (as far as I remeber)
