It's in the 90's temperature-wise here in the Northeast this weekend, and I have a wedding to attend tomorrow. I'm forcing myself not to think about the fact that I have to wear a suit in this tomorrow, but tonight is the rehearsal dinner, and it's supposed to be sort of casual dress. I was told khaki pants and a nice dressy shirt were fine. I asked the gf if it was OK to wear a yellow short sleeve button down shirt, and that I had a tie that matched it if necessary. She said that solid color short sleeve button downs are extremely tacky, and that wearing them with a tie is pretty much unacceptable. I've seen plenty of guys wear them, and sometimes also with ties, and it never looked weird to me.
So am I that fashion-challenged, or is it really bad to wear an outfit like that? And why do clothing stores stock so many short sleeved solid color shirts if it's such a no-no?
Wear a long sleeve in a tasteful colour, unbutton the sleeves and roll them up, if you can get away with it. Otherwise I'd suggest trying to wear something in cotton or linen.

Just wear the suit, you sissy.
I'm wearing the suit at the wedding. My question was for the rehearsal dinner.

That was plan B, and looks like what'll happen now. Btw, it's a big Irish wedding, and the people in the family who live over there still (Dublin area) flew in last night. I think the Irish are my favorite people on Earth. Seriously, you guys are awesome.

Long sleeves. Tie.

short sleeved button downs are hideous in general, but with a tie you're multiplying the hideousity by like 523.
There's nothing wrong with short sleeve button downs by themselves. I'm not talking about the Mormon uniform plain white starched shirt. I'm talking about a colored shirt with a pattern.
But yeah, adding a tie to a short sleeve button down is dorksville.
