was grabbing lunch in the grocery store and heard it

verses of Gone have a really similar melody to Stevie Nicks voice in "Tell me lies, tell me sweet little lies" (that's the CHORUS, for those singing along at home)

Right from the start I heard that piece of Fleetwood Mac as well. You're not going crazy  :D

not sure how to do that cool nifty thing people did with WorldWide Suicide and The Offspring's "Come Out and Play" comparing the two, but if anyone has a cd of Fleetwood Mac's best songs, the song's certainly going to be on there.

Incidentally, I think Gone is the worst song on the cd, on the sole basis of the LYRICS during the first verse (did you see Ed singing them on Storytellers. so laughable and serious). Nonetheless, I couldn't write a song like that to save my life, so I'm just a stupid fucking critic, who if was capable to write said lyrics would probably be just as pained as he was during my recitation of them

I know it just your opinion and a legitimate beef if its w/ the lyrics and all, but
You really think its worse than Big Wave?
I truly believe its unAmerican not to like the version of Gone from the AOL Sessions. The backing vocals by Matt are great.

Ed sounds raw on that version and I love it. I definitely agree, Matt's part at the end is great, it really adds to the song.

Gone is still one of my favorite and I will have to go listen to the Stevie Nicks song because I don't hear the resemblance.

yeah, i really do. I didn't like Big Wave at first, but in the last week, I've rediscovered it and have loved jamming it--it's fun, a lot of fun. I like the end of Gone, when it picks up and stays up, but the lyrics in the verses and the pre-chorus (the "the lights in the city only look good when i'm speeding" lines) I just really feel are are sub-par work with the lyrical integrity of the rest of the album, and moreover, the themes of the song.

just checked this out--yeah, this definitely gives me a greater appreciation for the song. i still am somewhat annoyed by what I said earlier, but this version is AWESOME. maybe it's just those two lines I don't like (in the first verse, and the pre-chorus), but they are great enough to make feel like the song's subpar... . hmmmm...... what kind of standards do I possess you should rightfully ask

Silverchair's Cemetery (from Freakshow) has a very similar verse to Gone's verse. Thats where the similarity ends really, but both use acoustic guitars in that verse and its a similar tempo. I immediately thought of Gone when i put on Cemetary recently.

....I actually like Cemetary better, probably because of the strings on the song

I'm glad that helped change your opinion on the song, even if a little, I know it did for me a lot. Embarking on a roadtrip to a show when you are leaving a big city on the highway, those lyrics meant a lot to me.
