Chiefs' Roaf retires

RIVER FALLS, Wis. | Tackle Willie Roaf, the foundation of one of the NFL’s best offensive lines, has retired.

Roaf wasn’t with the Chiefs when they reported for training camp on Thursday. Roaf told The Kansas City Star this morning by telephone that he had told president/general Carl Peterson and coach Herm Edwards of his plans weeks ago and even sent the Chiefs a letter declaring his intentions.

“I guess they want me to reconsider,’' Roaf told The Star. “I’m solid on retiring and going back to school.’'

Roaf, 36, was emphatic in the spring that he would play this season. But today he said lingering hamstring and knee trouble led to his decision.

Roaf missed six games last season because of hamstring problems. He missed half of the 2001 season while playing for New Orleans after tearing knee ligaments.

Roaf joined the Chiefs in a trade from the Saints in 2002 and was a major factor in their offensive success. His retirement leaves a significant hole at left tackle.

Edwards said Thursday the Chiefs would use Jordan Black at left tackle and Kyle Turley at right tackle when practice begins this afternoon.

Roaf played 13 NFL seasons and made the Pro Bowl in all but two of them. Despite playing on only teams to reach the playoffs, Roaf will likely be selected for the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

kinda messed up. i've been on the chiefs website several times today, and the first place I hear of this is here.

don't know the exact record with him gone last week, but it wasn't good. him being out was the 1 single reason we lost the game in Buffalo 10-3 last year.

This won't mean shit for LJ's rushing title hopes this season. He'll still approach 2,000 yards and will likely score 20+ TDs.

Roaf was old, slow and had lost a couple steps from even a couple years ago. He was one of the best of his era, but with TIME to digest this and plug in a suitable starter, they'll be fine. I'd be a lot more concerned if the other side of his line collapsed, to be honest.

not extremely worried. Still have 2 pro-bowlers from last year on the O-line with Brian Waters and Will Shields. Former pro-bowler Casey Wiegman at center. Plus with the new offensive scheme, I expect more 2 tight end sets, and Jason Dunn is the best blocking end in the league. That with Tony Gonzalez on hte other side. Just give it to LJ, get out of the way, and let him run downhill.

Run Blocking is easier than Pass Blocking see Kevin overpaid Schaffer.

Roaf says he is retiring, but dosen't sound real solid on it. Says he's not happy about this decision, but his body is hurting. Was asked if there was anyway in a month or so, would there be a way where he thought, "I feel pretty good", and maybe be ready to go. He said there is no way to predict that. Said he would consider playing if the Chiefs allowed him to skip training camp but doesn't think it would be fait to his teammates to do that. After hearing the interview, I would say there is a 40% chance he plays at some point this year.

Stuff goes in waves. When Brett Favre comes out and talks about how fucked his team is this year, we'll all be talking about that.

He only quit on the Broncos, wouldn't you. He has put up good numbers since he has been here. was the 11th leading receiver in the NFL last year. But he is the 45th highest paid WR. When Johnnie Morton was here, Morton got #1 receiver money, all awhile Kennison put up better numbers. My guess, the Chiefs will give him a extra million over 3 years. Kennison is only asking for more money. Not sitting out. Said he will honor the contract he signed.

We could start this now as well.

They could have had a lot more time if he decided to retire, say, at the end of last season instead of the beginning of training camp.

Oh, and as for the right side, they also lost Welbourn to retirement. Kyle Turley is slated to take his place.

I can agree that the pass blocking is a bigger concern, however, it could indirectly affect the running game as well, especially if Gonzo is stuck blocking more and no one else but Quitterson is there to receive. Teams are more liable to stack the box and blitz.
