Petty delivers superstar set at White River Amphitheatre

A nearly full house of Tom Petty fans expected to see just one superstar when the rock legend and his backing band, the Heartbreakers, stopped by Auburn’s White River Amphitheatre Sunday night. But instead they got three big shots for their money when Fleetwood Mac’s Stevie Nicks and Pearl Jam’s Eddie Vedder dropped in to lend a helping hand.
Nicks wasn’t a total surprise to anyone who had kept up with recent shows via the Internet. “Stevie’s been out on tour with us and we won’t let her go home,†Petty said after Nicks made her debut, 10 songs into the nearly two hour set, with “Stop Draggin’ My Heart Around,†a song from her 1981 album “Bella Donna,†on which Petty appears. She stuck around for one more, characteristically twirling her skirt as she delivered her spunky rendition of “I Need to Know.†In true diva style, she would make a couple of outfit changes and be back for “Insider,†“Learning to Fly,†“Don’t Come Around Here No More†and the spectacular finale. But no sooner had Nicks sauntered offstage than Petty tossed another curveball. “I hear a lot of people sing our songs,†he said. “My favorite version of this is when Eddie Vedder sings it.â€
Then out walked Vedder, freshly shaven since his band’s Pearl Jam headlining dates the previous weekend at the Gorge Amphitheatre. His well-received contribution was “The Waiting.†And he, too, would return. It was actually a reunion of sorts, since Petty and Pearl Jam had recently shared the stage when their tours intersected in Denver and St. Paul, Minn.
But it’s not as if Petty needed to bring out that sort of heavy firepower to get fans all riled up. He had the crowd all warmed up and in the mood by his lonesome, from the opening notes of “Listen to Her Heart.†And they only got more enthusiastic – dancing and belting out some of the most familiar lyrics in rock at their seats – as Petty & The Heartbreakers strolled through a set of feel-good classics that included “I Won’t Break Down,†“Free Fallin’,†“Learning Fly†and “Runnin’ Down a Dream.â€
Petty even took a few minutes to pay homage to a few influences, playing the bluesy rocker “I’m a Man†(credited to the Yardbirds, but actually an amped up version of the Bo Diddley classic.) The band followed with a couple more covers, Fleetwood Mac’s “Oh Well†and The Traveling Wilbury’s “Handle with Care,†with guitarist and harmonica player Scott Thurston filling in nicely for the late Roy Orbison on the latter.
Petty played only two numbers from his excellent new album: ‘Highway Companion.' The disc’s bluesy leadoff track “Saving Grace†appeared early on, after “Free Fallin,’†and stood up well next to the classics.
“Square One†was the other new song, which appeared during the semi-acoustic, ballad portion of the program. “This is one of my favorite songs I’ve written in a while,†Petty said, by way of introduction.
The encore -- which began with “You Wreck Me†and Van Morrison’s “Mystic Eyes†-- came to one of the most spectacular finale’s this critic has seen.
“Are you ready, people? Are you ready people?†Petty sang, like a preacher leading a revival. “I just wanna hear the loudest noise you can make, people.†Fans complied, screaming their lungs raw as the band shifted into “American Girl,†with Vedder and Nicks back onstage. Petty let Vedder sing a few early lines before Pearl Jam’s singer backed away, with a grin and a humble “we’re not worthy†wave of his hand, before the man of the hour took over.
Fans weren’t so shy, as they shouted back one of the most familiar and infectious choruses in rock history: “Oh yeah, all right/ Take it easy baby/ Make it last all night/ She was an American girl.†And with the final notes, Vedder punched clear through the tambourine he’d been banging, a huge smile on his face as one of the most satisfying shows of the season eased to a close.
Trey Anastasio opened the whole affair, heading a four-piece band that was also occasionally joined by a pair of backup singers. Songs like “Sweet Dreams Melinda†and “Dragonfly†grew from simple pop numbers into funky jams that kept clusters of their faithful up and dancing.

Thanks for the pics. As for the discussion about the beard or no beard, I say I prefer the beard. Nothing wrong with the clean shaven look either though.
