on a similar note. I saw clerks two i feel oddly like randal talking shit about somone on the internet. its a good movie btw.

Shyalamalannamenan is one of those directors who so desperately want to be an auteur that they ignore where their talents lie and start forcing their work into a certain niche. The Sixth Sense was a good movie and Unbreakable was probably even better, but with Signs he was forcibly trying to recapture the wittiness of those two, resulting in a terribly overwrought and silly plot. The Village worked mainly because of the atmosphere and the actors, but was (at least plot-wise) dull. As for Lady in the Water, I've yet to see it, but reviews haven't been good.

This man should be writing episodic television series, not writing and directing big-budget motion pictures.

(I've purposefully ignored Praying with Anger and Wide awake, since they were mediocre at best and were made before he started thinking of himself as a brilliant movie maker).

Signs and the Sixth Sense are his best movies critically/monetarily. I like the guy's work.

Signs is horrible. I actually felt insulted by the lazy writing and enormous plot-holes.

i liked signs a lot. the music helped add to the tension. i saw it openning day, and at the time, they guarded the fact if it was an alien or not. so watching the movie actually was intense. if you saw it after knowing there was an alien and it wasn't some phenomenon, then you're missing al ot of the fun. 6th sense would suck if you knew from the get go that the kid sees dead people and he's dead too.

i do agree that he seems to want to be witty and pertinent in only one niche of movies. he seems like he has a sense of humor and a way or communicating well with his actors. he could do dramas very easily.

but he's got a crowd that loves what he does and it pays his bills. maybe the critics don't like it, but whatever. pearl jam could probably play country music, but they've got a base of fans who love them for rock.

I saw it too without any prior knowledge of the plot, but I found it to be dull, silly and preachy. Some plot elements made too little sense to allow me to take any other aspect seriously (Killed by water; Unable to grasp the concept of doorknobs; Randomly running around and jumping on top of things).

As for him not venturing out of his niche: I understand why he does so, but it's hampering his growth as a movie-maker. In order to excel as a niche-director, you need to understand what makes that niche work a lot clearer than he does. He lacks any form pragmatism.

It's a beautiful song, and fits perfectly with the movie.

Signs is one of my favorite movies, so I'd have to dsagree with you there, 42. I really enjoyed the movie. I still remember people screaming in the theatre. it was crazy.

I haven't seen Lady in the Water yet, but I'd like to.

signs was a damn good movie... unbreakable was his best...

the thing i respect about shamalandslssdkgsdk is that he writes for the medium... none of the stories would work if the scenes between the scenes existed, and i think that shows a great understanding of the medium and its really hard to do
