I've heard arguments for several movies being the best ever, but it's so hard to decide.
I've heard good cases made for Fight Club, Shawshank, The Godfather, Gone With The Wind, and several others, but I have to go with another.
Before I say what it is I want to say that I have done my homework. I've seen 231 of the top 250 on IMDB, and own about half. I've worked at a video store for three years, so I get to see the obscure ones as well as the mainstream ones.
After seeing probably close to 10,000 movies in my lifetime I have to say the best movie of all times is the first movie that I ever saw:
JAWS
It's as close to perfection as any movie will ever come. Yes I know there are plot holes, and some continuity gaps, but when acting, writing and pacing are this good who cares.
The first half of the film is a great build to the second half (the best half) when the three are on the boat. The acting of these three is flawless aboard the Orca. You love or hate these guys, but ultimatley you care what happens. to them.
Not having the shark on screen is also what makes this movie great. what you don't see is always better then piles of gore or special effects.
By far the best scene of the film is in the galley when Quint & Hooper compair scars, and Quint tells the Indy storey. I get chilles EVERY TIME.
What do you all think about my choice?
What do you think is the single best movie ever?
Only one movie, this is not a great movie list thread.

It comes down to Pulp Fiction and Empire Strikes Back. I think they both contain everything you need in a movie.
Neither of the films have proper beginnings or endings, in the traditional sense. And interestingly enough, these are two of my favorite films of all time.
I can't pick a "best movie" though. It's impossible.

I'm not a fan of beginnings or good endings.
