I am no expert in this area. Although I smashed one once. Just wondering if there are any guitar experts out there and what think of eddie's ability? (waits for 2 pages off topic)
Alright so he is atually better than you might think, in a way... it's hard to say really.... considering for how long he plays, he absolutely sucks... thinking about the songs he wrote on the guitar and the way he seems to play it without really knowing how to do it is awesome though. Oh and he's better than Cobain ever was. Ha!

he´s no guitar virtuoso as far as guitar technics goes, but he´s a pretty original guitar player, meaning that he´s got a style and a sound that is his own (think about how easy it is to recognize what Ed is playing when you listen to bootlegs), and achieving that own style makes him a pretty good guitar player in my book.

yeah, that's it. he's got a unique style, which makes his playing interesting. IMO interesting playing is a more valuable commodity than virtuosity.

that basically sums it up. I mean, he can do a really cool guitar part out of nowhere in his very own style, but he's not the most technical player. You might even say that he's got no technique at all - or has created his own one.
However, he has a very unique and interesting style of playing and is a really good and in a way versatile songwriter on the guitar.

i find myself drawn to eddie's playing too, but mostly b/c the stuff he plays is way easier to play than the other two. but like a few people said already, i dont think technical skill is as important as creativity

Have you listened to many live shows? Ed screws up the guitar parts far more than Mike or Stone. I'm not saying he's a poor guitar player, but from what I've heard from him, I'd say average at best, in terms of technical skill.

yeah he screws it up because he's got a pretty raw style of playing. I sometimes prefer such a style as well, still I know that I can play differently from that. Plus, there are rumours out there that he's a bit drunk at times during shows.

Sure, but I think we are diverging into the difference between technical skill and creative skill. For example, Mike pretty much has a 10/10 for technical guitar skill. But I'd give him a low rating somewhere around 2/10 for creativity. A good technically skilled guitar player isnt going to be screwing up nearly as much as Ed does, no matter what style you are talking about. But the man makes up for it with his creative ability.
