I guess the Sox came close to making a three team trade at the deadline involving the Astros and Braves.... Supposedly it would have been Crisp/Ellsbury, Hansen and Delcarmen for Jones who would have been shipped to the Astros for Oswalt. Like most trade rumors at the deadline, this never saw the light of day.

My brother and I saw this last nite on the SportsCenter, and both commented "I've never seen that happen before!"

Thank god. I would have cried.

And I really feel like this guy is really coming into his own. He's 29 and I think he's best years are still to come.

I didn't see this hr either...I missed sportscenter last night. :?

it happens from time to time. Probably says more about the bats than the guy hitting the home run.

Once upon a time, cork or superballs would fly out of the bat if this happened.

I disagree. If Jason Kendall ever hits a broken bat home run, I'll dance naked at the bus station in a pool of mayonaise.

It's not just that he hit a broken bat home run....he hit a broken bat homerun to centerfield that traveled 420 feet! It was a bomb even with a solid bat!

what do you disagree with? that it happens sometimes or that it might be caused by the bats being used today?

I disagree that it has more to do with the bats. I think it's more to do with the players. Bonds uses bats that never break. He maybe breaks 1 or 2 bats a year, if at all. The players who we've just talked about are some of the strongest and best players, and hit tons of homers (Bonds, Jones, Palmeiro). I'm not saying the bats play zero part, but it's got to be very small. I think it's much more to do with the players, and how strong they are.

Players break bats all the time. But very few have ever hit a broken bat home run. The strength of the player hitting it is mostly what makes it possible.

Anyone can break a bat. Not anyone could knock the ball out of the park at the same time.

there's been speculation that the number of broken bats has increased in recent years because of the type of bat being used:

It's reasonable to assume that the more broken bats you have, the better the chance of a broken bat home run.

I'll give you that. I think it might be possible, and reasonable. But I still consider the batter of much more importance than the bat in terms of the variables. Like maybe 95% batter 5% bat.

Pick a guy that almost never hits a hr when his bat doesnt break. I am sure you got nothing to worry about.
