Anyone catch this? It was kind of under the radar, but it's on Netflix.
It's like a fake History Channel documentary about history since the Civil War, except that the South won. Lincoln has to try to escape to Canada with Harriet Tubman.
You see how it changes the Western Expansion, WWII, Women's Lib, etc. And it's intercut with this hilariously commercials for racist products that are allowed because slavery never ended and black people are still possessions.
It's a pretty good show.

Slavery was on its way out even before the war, but it was going to die a long and slow death. The war over states rights sped it up.
This is what I tell all my buddies who tell me the US would be some massively regressive country if the South had won. Slavery would have been out in the near future regardless of who won. Who knows when black rights would have risen to the forefront, but I doubt it would have been a whole lot later than it was anyway.
The only real discernable difference had the South won would be the states having a bit more autonomy than it does currently. Other than that, the US would function much like it has.

Sounds like a Henry Turtledove novel?

I don't want to ruin the movie ... but President Davis used a revitalization of slavery to save the CSA economy during Reconstruction.

I'm arguing drunk, so maybe this makes no sense, but that was likely a ploy to rally support in the waning moments of the southern existence. He was looking for an out.

Okay. I'm going to go play NCAA 07 now.
Parchy, sober up and review the premise of the movie. This occured AFTER Grant surrendered to Lee.

Yeah ... the plot on getting Lincoln to Canada is great. So is WWII. The commercials and the language are worth the price of admission.

I'm about to watch this. A mockumentary showing an alternative history showing what would have happened if the South had won the war of Independence. I'm hopeful for it. It's a Spike Lee produced film.

This was great. I could see what he was trying to do and he manages it only occassionally, the rest of the time it's a little ham fisted (like the adverts, there are too many of them) but the thing that I kind of took away from it is that that's how America kind of actuallyis in some regards, not all obviously. Definitely an interesting film, kind of surprised it hasn't shown up on RM before, they usually like this sorta thing.
