Anyone else notice that the guitar at around the 4:50 part of Inside Job sounds almost exactly like the opening riff of TP & Heartbreakers The Waiting? When I first heard it in Inside Job it sounded so familiar but I couldn't put my finger on it...then I figured it was Petty and pulled out Hard Promises and there it was. I wonder if it's some sort of homage from Mike M to Mike C or just a coincidence...probably the latter.

probably a coincidence... there's only so many chord progressions out there, they get repeated quite often...

along the lines of a similar coincidence, i was just strumming the guitar the other day and thought, hm that sounds like the beginning of gone. then i was messing around with that, and thought, hm that sounds like the beginning of inside job...

the C-Em combo is quite vesatile...

It may or may not have been done intentionally, but either way, it happens.

Light Rail Coyotte from Sleater Kinney = All Night or Hail Hail from PJ
the doors Hello I Love You = All Day and All Of the Night from The Kinks

so on so on...

good question Veddar... that would be a hard one...
Wolfmother was playing live for like 3 years before an "official" album came out... (so there is a chance that song was on a boot someone in PJ heard)

and Pearl Jam was working on the new album, for like 3 years...

either way, they do have a part thats similar.
