women having no say.

you could argue religion is causing this problem, but it seems to me that religion can never be lifted. religion must be altered and conformed to fit modern day moral rules. as such, we don't pay attention to the bible too much when it says 'women should have no say in the final household rules, it's all up to men, sorry!' we've realized as people that that doesn't really make sense anymore.

what do you think?

I agree with you! It pisses me off the shitty (for my standards) women are treated there. Funny that in Iran is quite ok to women work, i guess it has something with the persian heritage.

You don't know anything about the middle east and the role of women within Arab culture.

of course that women plays a important role in every society, but for us (westerns) the role of women inside Islam seems quite "passive"

My grammar teacher on Canada was an iranian guy, he told me that on a islamic court, the female witness had only half of the value of a male witness.

No, not at all. By and large it is completely misunderstood and stems from xenophobia.

littlewing, how about instead of blasting people for presenting a discussion point, you provide us with some of your vast knowledge?

LW has spent time in region so I think he has some background on their cultural values that maybe the rest of us don't quite have. I would kind of like to hear what he has to say though.

Ive worked with women engineers from Iran , UAE & Lebanon before.

In Iran esp, the women there commands a great deal of respect from the men.

One engineer from UAE tells me, that, reforms are happening in terms of women being given more say in society. Its slow, but its happening.

Actually, I think the problem is the West sticking their noses in and making a fucked up situation a whole lot worse.
