Save You

I'm gonna save you fucker, not gonna lose you
I'm feeling cocky and strong, can't let you go
Too important to me, and too important to us
We'd be lost without you
I'm there, let yourself fall, I'm right below you now

And fuck me if I say something you don't want to hear, from me
And fuck me if you only hear what you wanna hear, from me, if I care
But I'm not leaving here

You helped me when I was down, I'll help when you're down
Why are you hitting yourself? c'mon and hit me instead
Let's pick up your will, it's grown fat and lazy
It's sympathetic as well, don't go on me now
And I'm not living this life without you, I'm selfish and clear
And you're not leaving here without me, I don't wanna be without...
My best friend
Wake up to see you could have it all
Whoa!

Cuz there is but you, and something within you
Has taken control, let's beat it
Get up, let's go
Oh, you're in your own world, let's see the whole world!
Let's pick up your soul

And fuck me if I say something you don't wanna hear from me (fuck me)
And fuck me if you only hear the treble in your head

Please help me to help you help yourself!
Help me help yourself
Help me, please want me to
Please let me to, help you...

Save You is probably my favorite song on Riot Act. The music has a force or power of its own that is only better complimented by the lyrics. For me, these lyrics are one of Pearl Jam’s best when it comes to their “harder” songs. The words are really simple but mean so much in so many ways.

One of the things that really make me love this song is that it was written by the band collaboratively. This is something that I really love that Pearl Jam does. The fact that this song has that feature makes it kind of special and more of “Pearl Jam” than just one person writing the music and the rest just playing along.

In this song, Eddie shows the care and love he has for another person and that he’ll do anything to not lose his friend to whatever troubles he is having. Eddie says that he needs his friend to, really be himself. He feels that without each other, neither of them exists.
Eddie says “And fuck me, if I say something you don’t want to hear from me.” This shows that even if his friend doesn’t want Eddie’s help, he’s going to help anyway because that’s what is best. Eddie will do all that he can to help his friend, but really it’s up to him.

I have many favorite lines in this song, and it’s hard to choose just one, so I’ll share a few.

“Cuz there is but you, and something within you/has taken control/let's beat it
get up, let's go” I really love this line because it’s true in everybody. All of us have something inside us that can really drag us down. But also we have something that can bring us up. We just have to decide which one will win.

And right after the previous line:

“Oh, you're in your own world, let's see the whole world!” I probably love this line the best because it shows what we can really do with our lives. If we sit around and pout all day because we think our life sucks than we will be in our own world and no one else will want part in it. But if you come out, and realize what kinds of chances and opportunities you really have, then the whole world is yours.

Cool Fact: Halfway through recording Save You, Matt Cameron lost his headphones and continued through the song by watching Jeff Ament's fingers and hoping he was in time.

I really love all the aspects of this song. 5 Stars.

My 2nd favorite song from Riot Act, behind "1/2 Full". 5 stars.

One of the first songs I could get into when I got the greatest hits. I think I've been overexposed to this song though as i skip it on boots. I think it comes off much better on the studio version. I kinda thinks it a middle of the road song in comparsion to Riot Act and Pearl Jam's catologue as a whole. Well actually its up higher than that... umm.. What I'm trying to say is that this is a rocking song no question about it. :bammer:
Oh yeah good lyrics too.

That is a good line. 4 Stars for me, top 2 or 3 off Riot Act, good vib live as well (from the boots at least) surprised that do not play it more often.

They played it a LOT. Also I think there are lots of songs on Riot which are just a step from this one.

Seems to me like this is a fun live song, especially when you see how nuts Mikey goes on the Showbox DVD.
Its probably a 4 for me, its a pretty cool time. It probably saves the first half of Riot Act from being the biggest pile of rubbish of all time.
Jeff just blows the roof with the bass on this.
Wow Pete, you post good when youre not in GD, that was a cool writeup. Good Cool Fact too.

3 stars, they've done better...like pretty much everything on Ten/Vitalogy.

very weak compared to I Am Mine, 1/2 Full, and All or None on Riot Act.

Green Disease is great too. Even if it is a simple little song.

Pete, that was a very nice write-up. I'm proud of you, son.

My favorite line from the song is the opening one: "I'm gonna save you fucker, I'm not gonna lose you." It's the narrator's audacity that I love so much. The person in question needs to be saved, for whatever reason, yet the narrator feels the need preface his admission of salvation by calling the subject a "fucker." This infers that the relationship is so close that each person can curse each other without hesitation or guilt. That line is a truly loaded statement.

I have been both the narrator and the person being addressed, which is probably why I love the song so much; I can relate to it from two entirely different perspectives. Though I love the song, this reasoning makes it a tough listen for me sometimes. Both situations are troublesome, and remind me of times of my life that I'd rather not remember. But Ed's lyrics, and the fashion in which he sings them, are perfect. Is it a lyrical, or for that matter, musical, masterpiece? Fuck no. Yet it works.

Save You is all about the feeling. Others on this board have called it a poor man's Spin the Black Circle, but I don't hear that at all. What I hear is a passionate, aggressive love song about helping someone in need. Every one one of us need help from time to time, and we also have to help others. I think every person has been both the narrator and the person being addressed, which is why it hits so close to home. We're all just people who need help or have to help someone else, and this song nails that need.

5 stars.

3 stars,
good song.
But there are lots of songs on RA that are much better (Can't Keep, I am mine, Thumbing my way, you are, green disease, help help, 1/2 full, all or none)

Hands down the best song on Riot Act - and the strongest vocal performance on the record! It finishes so strongly - and you really connect to the song in a way all great Pearl Jam songs grab you...love it

Possibly my least favorite moment on Riot Act. It's an alright song, and sometimes I get in the mood for it. But in general, it's such a huge divergence from what the rest of the album is trying to say that it kind of annoys me. More than a few of us have talked about the idea of Riot Act needing to be shortened up in order to be really successful. This would be one of the first I would cut....I'd henceforth insist that it goes on Lost Dogs, because it is a pretty good song, but it really hits me about half as hard as most of that album does.
