Not sure if we have covered this, but has anyone else noticed that whenever something bad happens, the media tends to accompany the news with pictures of young white girls aged 14-24 (assuming there are not dead bodies to show)?

For example:

Newsweek article on healthcare releated bankruptcy:
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/14470912/site/newsweek/

Or Natalee Holloway or Debra La-hoe. Or go look at the photos from the Lebanon protests or the Russian air crash on Yahoo news photos.

Is our society really so shallow that we need the catholic school girl effect to care about news? I'm not really complaining ( ) just something I noticed....

That's because the music is dull and lifeless.

There are hot, sexy girls in pictures of the Russian plane crash?

'hot and sexy' is a matter of taste but the only crach photo as of this monring under recommended/most-viewed was:

http://news.yahoo.com/photo/060822/ids_photos_wl/r3228972524.jpg

I guess I just don't get this 'young white chick' must be inculded in the news thing. Look at what they did to Katie Couric. They turned her into Skeletor w/ eyeshadow to appeal to this new demographic.

Actually, I think I'll just derail my own thread to post another pic of my future wife (and ARTe newscaster) Melissa :

God, she's got the "I got laid at 3 am and just threw on a t-shirt and scrunchie" look in that one. She IS sex.

I don't doubt that some photographer nails a shot of a chick he thought was hot, whether he consciously meant to do it or not, but I don't think it happens so often, or that non-sexy folks are left out so often, as to be a major concern.

It's probably a more conscious decision to have a hot, white chick report the news. I have no idea what the ramifications of THAT are.

People will watch the news, and yet not absorb any of the stories. It's a win-win for the networks.

I'm pretty sure ugly people don't make the news on purpose. If you have a choice of 20 pictures of grieving people, you're naturally going to choose the ones with attractive people. I liken it to the stadium effect. At any sporting event the crowd cam always finds the cute chic eating cotton candy or dancing in her seat. They don't zoom in on 275 pound Gus with a footlong in one hand and a beer in the other.

Or like how they find the four black people at the Republican National Convention.

After they get that shot, they make them put their Security uniforms back on and get the hell back to work.
