This question was asked to me, i answered with this.

Well, theres fooking loads. Did you like the sound of ten? If you did then you should buy VS, it sounds similar but actually probably better. If you like that then you should probabaly buy 'yield'. If you find yourself getting in to the more rocky ones then buy 'vitoalgy' and the new self titled album. If you start getting in to the more obscure melow tunes then buy 'no code' and 'binural'

Did i do well? What would you have said?

I would have given a similar answer. I don't think I would have gone with Yield but Vs, Vitalogy, and S/T are all good choices. Actually I might have reccomended RVM so they could get a sense of what was on the other records to figure out where they want to go next--or make them a mix cd with 2 songs or so from the other albums. It could be they'd love No Code or Riot Act but it's hard to reccomend one of those when all they've heard is Ten

I'd be inclined to give them one of the boots to listen to, MSG New York, or something like that

a boot isn't a bad idea, but I think MSG new york is more of a fans show than a starter show. How about San Diego or SF III from this yea?

I'd go:

Ten, Avocado, Vs, Yield, Vitalogy, No Code, Binaural, Riot Act.

or

Ten, RVM, Avocado, Vs, Yield, Lost Dogs, Vitalogy, Binaural, No Code, Riot Act

If someone ONLY has Ten, then they should buy the albums in chronological order. If you ever have the opportunity to do that, it is the best way to get to understand a band.

then they too can know the crushing disappointment of having No Code be the record that follows Vitalogy

David is probably right. i always put songs on mixes chronologically when I'm making an intro cd--that way they can see how the band developed.

You should listen to some of the live stuff, it has a completely different feel to it.

try RVM and if you're into the stuff from an album thats on there, get that one next. IE if you like Animal, get Vs. If you like I Am Mine, get Riot Act. If you like Off He Goes, you suck though... that song is horrid. but if you like Corduroy, get Vitalogy

Exactly. You understand the evolution of the band better this way.

Make that: They too can can experience the transition from the band's "great but basic" period to its "really unique and special" period. 8)
