i was torn over putting this in a&e or other bands, so i put it here. i'd like to debate how awful present day entertainment is.
for god's sake, 24 just won best drama series. the show was awful last season. grey's anatomy was in the running. the show is horrible.
u2 won album of the year...do i need to even go into the grammy's?
and crash won movie of the year.
what the hell is going on?

Lost was robbed.

I agree.
I thought the second season was better than the first, yet it gets shut out, while the first season dominated the emmys the year before.
But on topic, entertainment is all around. TV is absolutely horrible. Lost is the only show i'll make it a point to watch every week or so. There isn't a single really good comedy on, and even HBO has really been lacking. Entourage has been the only highlight of the last 6 months or so for them. The Sopranos season was dissapointing. The film industry also seems to just be going downhill since LOTR... and the music industry is far and away the worst offender of them all.

who cares? if you like a show, watch it. if you dont like a show, watch something else.
I think 24 is a great show, and I dont mean for its writing, lighting, artistic integrity or any other bullshit. I just enjoy watching it on Monday nights. if it wins an award, wtf do I care?
hey scrubs didnt win the emmy for best supporting handjob, Ill never watch that shitty show ever again!!

I agree. TV is horrendous, i can barely ever find anything worth watching and I usually end up settling on a documentary or star trek re-run. The only currently running shows that i enjoy are House and CSI. My other favorites have all been cancelled. I can't fucking stand reality TV, and that seems to be all that the networks want to show. It doesn't matter if it's Survivor, American Idol, or Flava of love...they seem to be pandering to the lowest IQ points in their audience and people are fucking eating it up and begging for more.
My interest in movies has waned significantly in recent years, though i do trust that there is stuff out there worth watching, i just don't have the energy or desire to look for it.

You make a good point. Maybe LOTR was just the high water mark for some of us, so it's really tough for lesser movies to follow in it's footsteps.
Popular music is hands down the worst offender. The quality of the most popular acts over the last 40 years has never been stellar, but it seems to plummet further and further every year. It's only saving grace is that unlike television and cinema, it's much easier for artists to exist outside the mainstream and produce quality material. If that weren't the case, i'm certain that i would not have purchased more than 5 albums in the last 5 years.
The last epsiode of Six Feet Under was robbed. That was probably the best TV i've ever seen.
The awards shows are just about the industry patting itself on the back. Will and Grace? That show has sucked for years. Same with the West Wing. Good riddence to both. If the academy had any sense, The Shield would have been nominated and Colbert would have swept.
As for LOTR, those movies changed how movies are perceived by the viewing public. No "stars", no famous directors or producers, and made as a series of films. It showed the viewers that story counts as much as star power.
I don't watch much TV because I don't like a lot of shows, but I don't see what the problem is. If you don't like the shit, don't watch it, haha.
However, if you're basing how good entertainment is by who wins at award shows, then you're a dumbass anyway. There are a number of shows that are worth watching.

True, granted there were a few names (Elijah Wood and Cate Blanchett probably the biggest) but none that would be considered superstars. I don't think people would have recieved the movie as well with Mel Gibson as Aragorn or Julia Roberts as Arwen. I think a move like that would have severely cheapened the films.
Of course, Peter Jackson had grade A writing to work with too so that didn't hurt

Exactly. I'd rather watch grass grow than be forced to sit through any of the LOTR movies, and you can see how popular those are with people in this thread alone.

The complaint isn't about liking or disliking an individual show or movie, it's about the percieved decline in the quality of the medium in general. If someone likes to watch TV, but there aren't very many good TV shows then that person has a right to complain....especially since they are PAYING for that service through their cable provider and by viewing advertisements.
Personally i don't watch much TV so i'm not particularly vexed about the lack of quality entertainment, other than the fact that almost every show i did enjoy has been cancelled (presumably to make way for the next flash-in-the-pan reality series). I actually wish cable was a pay per channel kind of service. That way i could pay for the 5 channels which have decent programming, and get rid of the rest. I'd save a ton of money that way. I'd take the CBC, a sports channel, the Discovery Channel, the Comedy Network and the Cartoon Network. I'd be fucking set

"good" is highly subjective
It sure is. And in my opinion, the current offerings of the mainstream entertainment industry are far from "good". Obviously you aren't going to like every movie, every tv show and every hit single but it's to a point where i can look at my local movie listings or go to video store and not find a single thing that interests me. As i stated earlier, there are only 2 currently running prime-time television shows that I enjoy, and as for music, i stopped watching MTV and listening to commercial radio ages ago.
I used to be an avid movie fan, and a fairly avid television fan. Musically my tastes have long been segmented from the mainstream, so i'm not really lamenting the state of popular music because i haven't cared for it in over a decade.

Say what you want about Crash, but that scene with the little girl is probably the most powerful scene I've ever seen on any screen. It was better than any of the other nominees, and Capote and Munich were really amazing and very well-done films.
