Holy shit to both of you. I'd have to go back and check but I'm pretty sure this is the best matchup we've ever had.
Lekunk58--you brought your A game today. Terrific interpretation of Even Flow. We had two or three in recent rounds and this one is probably my favorite. I loved the uke here and the vaguely country feel it has. Nice vocals and a real fun solo.
Bookshelf--another classic with a great ending. I like how you work your own subtle twists into each of the songs. They aren't dramatic revisions but you still make them your own with the little flourishes, lyrical variations, etc.
God damn I'm really not sure about this round. I was pretty sure bookshelf was a lock for the finals but now I don't know. This will require a second listen for sure, and then some more for fun.

anyone ever heard of the hayseed dixie band? Lekunk could be a member Man that was really cool. Evenflow as a bluegrass song..I never thought I would hear that.
Bookshelf...again..really good. I didn't like this one as much as your others. I think I'm so attached to eds riff that the song doesn't sound right to me without it, but the SIFL finished it with a bang.
This is the first time I wasn't sure if I would vote for bookshelf but the last "don't let me down" put it over the top for me. The bluegrass even flow was really cool and very original. Very close call.

My first instinct was to vote for lekunk, but I didn't. I think I've grown to expect so much from bookshelf that If it's not his best work yet I feel compelled to vote against it...thats not really fair. I think it was still better than lekunks..(sorry lekunk) Don't worry lekunk if you lose..you just join the rest of the bookshelf fodder in the second chance bracket.

wow. although most of you seem to be hatin' on bookshelf relative to his othehr entries, i think this is actually my favorite of his so far. i love the little nod to "Gone" at the end of the second verse - anyone else catch that? very nice. it was catchy, polishly, different yet true to the orginal - and save it for later was just icing on the cake.
lekunk - i'm sorry man, i know exactly what you're going through (as does just about everyone else in the loser's bracket - i don't think it's a coincidence that the people that have made it this far in the loser's bracket happen to be sent there by bookshelf). anyway - evenflow was fucking awesome. LOVED the oringal interpretation, the uke, everything. it was really sweet. but it jsut can't hold up to betterman. anyone else and you'd be the winner - i'm glad my evenflow didn't have to battle yours...
leknuk - that was some sweet ukulele work man....and was that a banjo for the leads and solo? haha....excellent....your voice sounded good, but was a little off key at times, nothing major though....i liked the backing vocals too....the showcase of that song is easily the ukulele though, good god...
bookshelf - another very strong performance with "butterman"....you went original with the opening and melody....good stuff....save it for later was also excellent....best part of the entry was when you held the note on "down"

leknuk- that was freakin' awesome man...i loved the interpretation...something totally different from what the record (and what most people hear it as,) which is awesome. Great Job !!
bookshelf- I know this is tough after I talked to you via PM, but I just don't think yours matched up to leknuk's cover. Honestly, your song was fucking amazing as well. It's not that I didn't like your song...it's just that I liked his a tiny bit more.

Man...to say that this is getting down to the nitty gritty is an understatement...
I find myself having to be increasingly picky to determine for whom to vote in each successive round...and this is no different.

Christ, man...DAMN. In addition to the typical crystal clear production we have come to expect from you, I love the modification to the opening riff. And I love it not because it's different although that is cool. But I love it because it is stylistically correct.
But the thing that sold this song for me was the transition. Here is this tune that is Betterman...but at the same time it isn't...It is darker...it is not anthemic...it is more modern...almost prog for a second there even...
And then it builds and explodes into the classic tune. Harmonic...major...and all the time heart-breakingly celebratory. I have always found this song to be contradictory in the way that so many old rock tunes are in terms of the music belying the story. The music is powerful and upbeat where the story is of a woman who is too weak to step away from the bonds of a relationship that is not providing her the satisfaction she deserves. A sad story by almost any measure. This version tells the tale both ways and I think that is damn cool.
As I said it comes down to the details at this level. I really enjoyed Even Flow...but Bookshelf comtinually hits the little details in his reinvention of these tunes. At this stage of the game it is the small differences in interp, the increased production quality, the nailing every note, the consistency in time keeping...Those are strong separators now much moreso than before as the weaker competitors have been eliminated and we're watching heavyweights in action here...

the rhythm part for that song was actually a mandolin, the lead was a banjo played with a guitar pick because i got too frustrated with fingerpicking

At this point, it seems a little like talking about the end of the game during the 6th inning--especially since the voting doesn't reflect the quality in this even flow by a long shot--but I want to say...
leknuk (let's spell your name right, shall we? )...your version is spot-fucking-on, with all the right instrumentation and arrangement. You did bring it, just like you brought it last round, so I knew I seriously had to bring it, too.
And that's what is awesome about this whole fuckin thing. Everyone is bringin it...It's contagious. We're feeding off one another. If you even listen to the entries from one artist in each successive round, you hear this progression of quality, thoughtfulness, creativity. Fuckin shit! Imagine if the whole of popular music worked that way.
Once again...thanks for the reviews, gang. Of all kinds. And B.E...that was truly thoughtful and awesome. You articulated more than I could have realized about the song...it's always been this dark subject matter, and I gravitated toward that feeling. In my version, there's a tiny drop of "Dead Man" in that verse guitar part. And IC was right about the "Gone" nod...that felt right, too. And the arrangement of the "memories back..." part was pretty much ripped off from "Present Tense." This was my I Love Pearl Jam song, for sure. And it's fuckin great to share this stuff with folks who feel the same way.
