Mr Irwin apparently died in a marine accident on the Great Barrier Reef, initial reports say.
A spokeswoman for Irwin's Australia Zoo said she was aware of the reports but the zoo would not be making any statements at this stage.

TELEVISION personality and environmentalist Steve Irwin has died in a marine accident in north Queensland.
The 44-year-old is believed to have been killed by a stingray barb that went through his chest, the sources said.
He was filming an underwater documentary off Port Douglas when the accident occured.
Mr Irwin's body was being flown to Cairns.
It's believed Mr Irwin's American-born wife Terri is trekking on Cradle Mountain in Tasmania and has yet to be told of her husband's death.
Mr Irwin - known worldwide as the Crocodile Hunter - is famous for his enthusiasm for wildlife and his catchcry "Crikey!".
The father of two's Crocodile Hunter program was first broadcast in 1992 and has been shown around the world on cable network Discovery.
He's also starred in movies and has developed the Australia Zoo wildlife park, north of Brisbane, which was started by his parents Bob and Lyn Irwin.

The stingray barb is the tail at the end of the body? Am I right, I really don't know, just guessing. How does it stab you in the heart? Does it swim backwards are did he just swim too fast and hit it.
Now, if that isn't what a stingray barb is can someone please tell me.... thanks.

Never underestimate the penetrating ability of a stingray’s barb, even on the smallest of stingrays. The stingray’s barb is designed to penetrate virtually all sorts of dense materials, including wood and leather. And as unbelievable as it may seem, it’s been documented that large stingrays are able to drive a barb through a boat’s wooden planks or completely through a persons arm or leg.
According to Dr. Shipp, when a stingray strikes, it either removes its barb entirely, or breaks it off inside of the victim. When this occurs, doctors must probe the wound to make sure all particles have been removed, so the injury will not result in gangrene. In cases where the barb deeply penetrated, the wound must be enlarged to make sure it is properly cleaned.

apparently they're serated, very dangerous, and quite venomous because it's what the stingray uses as its weapon.

This thread is over in Arts too and I said kind of the same thing. It is sad, but how many times can you put yourself in those situations and walk away.

If Soundgarden is perfectly fine with playing together with Tad Doyle on vocals, why the fuck is he wasting his life promoting the single worst album of all time? Holy shit, he has to be the stupidest motherfucker on earth.
Very sad to see. And yes, I am shocked. While it looked like he did "stupid shit", the man knew what he was doing. Sounds kind of like a freak accident. I've never heard of anyone dying from a sting ray barb before. I'm sure he will be mourned extensively.

it wasnt stupid shit to the other guys like him, and for the life of me i cant remember their names, but theres a few of them on the discovery channel, cause thats what they do, but to the people he entertained, it was stupid shit, and im willing to bet theres a high percentage who watched him like they do NASCAR, watching to only see a car wreck

Bingo. People rarely die from this kind of wound, and yes, he absolutely knew what he was doing, or he would have died a long, long time ago.
On a lighter note, (if there can be such a thing immediately after something like this happens), I think the crocodile community around the world just breathed a collective sigh of relief.
