"Many "hardcore" Pearl Jam fans (and I count my self as being pretty hardcore) often claim that they dislike Ten for being over-produced and often plump for No Code or Yield when asked their vote for best album. While these albums are fantastic, they do not represent that fantastic moment in time when the stars are aligned, the band are seperate parts of one whole and they create a masterpiece. Ten is such an album. The songs are untouchable, the lyrics touching and angry, Eddie Vedder's cathartic songwriting making them more than just another grunge band. I personally love the sound of Ten, great guitar playing, awesome solos, Eddie's trademark howls. Truly inspiring stuff. "

This review speaks volumes. For one to say they they no longer like the songs on Ten is understandable, given the overexposure of them. But to try to revise history and deny what the notions are in this review is just being a contrarian for the sake of being a contrarian. Ten is a record that captured a moment in time like very few records have since pop music was born in the 1950s. Good review....articulates my contention to those who constantly decry the record, anyone who does that is simply missing the forest for the trees.

I was recently told by some guy who worked in a guitar shop that he like Ten and Nevermind but didn't like the sophomore albums or any of the follow ups for that matter. Makes me wonder about the general perception of the present day non-grunge fan. I think that Vs was a good follow up to Ten and shares some of the same likable characteristics of Ten. I guess it has to do with daughter and elderly woman being hits instead of blood, go, and rvm. I think go is even fiercer than even flow, and comming from a guitarist standpoint has a more rocking solo. maybe its that the choruses are less consistent in the harder songs save animal.

You just completely described the bane of any band who makes that quentessential record their first or second time out....the follow-up record will immediately be panned and quick word of mouth will convince people that it sucks. Nirvana, GnR and PJ all made 'better or equal to' records (In Utero, Use Your Illusion, Vs.) after their biggies, but people like that were just waiting to hear that it sucked, and for a guy like that, it kinda becomes a self fullfilling prophecy. So just like arguing politics with someone who has made up their minds despite any facts to dispute their position, its kinda pointless to argue about it.
