Now, obviously, this is a PJ message board, so we all know who would come out on top...but i made this thread on a DMB site and i just want to compare answers.
Two very different bands, two very different styles. But, these are also two of the most popular bands in the US...so its a question worth asking.
How do you feel about DMB compared to Pearl Jam? Anywhere in your spectrum of good bands? Second to Pearl Jam? First?
I've always been impressed by them as musicians, but the songwriting never holds up that well. Occasionally they have a song I don't mind, but there's never been half a record to it. Halloween is a fantastic track.

DMB is pretty good. I have all of their albums and some boots and whatnot. They've just become too pop-oriented with their last couple albums and it's turned me off. The Lillywhite's should have been put out insted of Everyday. Since then it's been downhill. It's to the point that I'm not disappointed if I miss a show in my area.
Before These Crowded Streets is the best thing they've done. The Dreaming Tree is my favorite song fo theirs, and I'm glad it's getting some live play every now and then.
As for seeing them live, it's a different story, obviously. Even the crap on Stand Up at least is marginally better in a live setting. They seem to bring out the best in most of their songs when they play them.
DMB is probably near the bottom of my top 10 for favorite bands (PJ is 2, behind Pink Floyd). But I certainly call myself a fan.

I listened to a few tunes they road tested before their latest album came out and they had promise ... then only one of the songs made it on the album ...
it's not the same band as it once was

Yup. They lost me after Everyday. I bought Busted Stuff, but that was the last. I still love their early stuff.

Well, at least Hello Again did make it on there. The Everybody Wake Up-Out Of My Hands-Hello Again run on that album is the only thing that makes me want to put it in my CD player.
Joy Ride I never cared for. I forget what else there was.
Dave's solo album is really good. Nothing terribly groundbreaking or meaningful, but I like to listen to it. His Dave and Friends show at Bonnaroo in '04 was incredible.

They're OK in small doses. I really liked Under The Table when it came out, but even that fizzles by the end.
The thing I don't get about DMB is the concerts. Everyone goes nutty for their live stuff, collecting tapes like PJ or The Dead, but the couple of times that I've listened to a full show, I've been left kind of cold. Some really good moments, but I was left FAR from wanting more when it ended, unlike virtually every PJ show I've heard.

Bartender is an amazing song. Absolutely one of my all time favorites. I also love Cry Freedom, Halloween, The Stone & Louisiana Bayou to name a few. That being said, My interest in DMB has been slowly drifting away over the last number of years. I have a lot of respect for the band's musical talent, they are amazingly talented, but since "Before These Crouded Streets", the only album that has remotly interested me is "Busted Stuff". DMB just seems to be slowly fadeing away...

I love DMB. I've seen them about 25 times. I think they always put on a great show. It's tough to compare them to PJ though. Both put on awesome shows, but they are very different atmospheres. I find DMBs music more uplifting and they are really good musically. Carter Beauford is an amazing drummer.
You can't top Eddie Vedder's voice though.
I don't think I could pick one over the other. I'll say they are tied for 2nd in my book (after The Beatles).

Indeed. Live versions can be mind-blowing. It's my second favorite song of theirs after Dreaming Tree. I finally heard one in person at Bonnaroo in 05.
Actually, my list of favorite songs of theirs is something like Dreaming Tree, Bartender, Two Step, Seek Up and Gravedigger. As you might guess, I tend to like their musically darker stuff. Even on their newer albums, it's the darker tracks I like (What You Are, Out of My Hands). And I don't mind saying that their Watchtower kicks all kinds of ass.
the DMB fans , the majority, are college frat fags, who say "oh DMB i guess it's the cool thing to do" much like the bandwagon red sox fans. i put them both in the same league
