It's movie watching time, and I've got a bunch to cross off my list here, as well as a few that I've seen before, but have recently bought on dvd. Make a suggestion, maybe I'll pick yours. The choices are:

Clay Pigeons
Martin
The Omen
Inside Man
Munich
Apocalypse Now

If you're looking for sheer entertainment, you just can't go wrong with The Omen (original, I assume) or Munich.

I don'ts fucks wit no remakes. You know that.

It probably doesn't matter, it's all going to come down to what the fiance is willing to watch. But a 2nd choice might find it's way in the dvd player after she goes to bed.

Come to think of it, you could watch Martin and let me know how it is. I've been meaning to see more non-Dead Romero.

Munich. Make sure you've seen Syriana and Good Night, and Good Luck too. I can't believe those three exremely important films all came out last year.

Munich important? That's a stretch. Highly entertaining espionage thriller, sure.

Go see the Crazies right now. Seriously. I don't know how that movie hasn't garnered more attention. Well, the lady is out of the mix, so it's down to Martin or the Omen. She wants to see Munich so that's out.



I've seen Syriana and Good Night and Good Luck. I liked them both, though I thought Good Night was much better. Munich has been on the list for a long time, but it's hard to find 3 hours uninteruppted these days.

The Crazies has been drifting around my top 20 in both Netflix queue and to-buy list for a LONG time.

How is that a stretch? The film is all about a conflict that continues to plague the middle east to this day, as well violence begetting violence. I'd say it works better as a critical piece than a thriller.

I thought Spielberg exploited the violence too much for it to work as a serious piece of filmmaking.

Are you serious? It was incredibly thoughtful, at least to me. Sure it was violent, but that was the point of the movie--violence leads to more violence.

Yes, but when you're incessantly showing non-stop blood flying across the screen, I stop taking it seriously. I found myself not being emotionally involved in the story, but just waiting for the next violent death to occur.

I think that's the horror movie fan in you talking. You should watch it again.

No, no - trust me. I've seen it three times. It comes off like I only look at movies from that perspective, I know, but I love serious cinema just as much if not more than horror and exploitation. And to me, Munich is action-like exploitation. It never made me think, and it never disturbed me. I had a similar reaction to it that I had to Commando. A lot of people dying horrible deaths, and none of it seems too serious. The worst part about Munich for me is that it masquerades as a serious film, when it's really just exploiting violence. I get the whole "vicious cycle of violence" and all, but I just don't think Spielberg executes it very well. He does the same thing in Saving Private Ryan, and even a little bit in Schindler's List. He should stick to Jaws and Minority Report type stuff. I just don't buy it when he makes serious dramas.

I've never heard anyone compare Munich to Commando, but okay.

I already did. Munich is in no way similar to a movie like Commando, which doesn't even have a point to make. I left it remembering the themes and the message much more than the violence. That to me says that it's much more than an espionage thriller or an action movie. But different strokes I guess.

To me, Commando is a more honest film in that it doesn't attempt to disguise that it's stupid entertainment that has no point. Munich attempts to make a point, and I feel it fails. Therefore, I don't see why it's any better. Lofty intentions do not equal a quality end product.
