LYNCHBURG, Virginia (AP) LYNCHBURG, Virginia (AP) -- Amid boos and shouts of "traitors" Randolph-Macon Woman's College officials announced Saturday that men would be admitted to the 115-year-old institution starting in 2007.
In the eyes of the board of trustees, going coed could help stabilize the school's finances as interest in all-women schools wanes.
But when officials floated the idea last month, it drew a sharp response. Online petitions and campus protests decried the move, angry e-mail flooded in, one alumnae group even hired a lawyer to try to discourage the board by citing legal concerns.
Saturday morning, an agitated crowd of some 400 students, alumnae and their supporters greeted the board's announcement by drowning out trustees president Jolley Christman as she tried to explain.
"Today we begin to heal. We begin to write the next chapter in our history," Christman said, barely audible over the shouting.
Christman said the 25-2 vote followed more than two years of study. The board determined coeducation was the best way to preserve the school's mission of high academic standards for undergraduate students and said a co-educational version of Randolph-Macon would emphasize global honors programs.
Interim President Ginger Worden told the students and supporters, "Do not, I implore you, turn your back on this college," but many in the crowd swiftly turned their backs on her in response.
"I'm sad. I'm really sad," said Gabriella Medina, a freshman from Puerto Rico. "If we can't reverse this, I guess I'm going to transfer."
Before Saturday's vote, supporters of single-gender education gathered on campus, many wearing yellow T-shirts distributed by the students' Coalition to Preserve Women's Education. A red-brick campus wall was lined with bedsheets turned into banners, one reading: "115 Years of Women Can't Be Wrong."
College officials expected resistance but said the move was necessary. Enrollment this fall was about 700, down from a student body of almost 900 in the 1960s.
Worden said the school has had to dip into its $140 million (€110.12 million) endowment for operations because of the large financial incentives required to attract good students.
Across the United States, only about 60 women's colleges remain, from nearly 300 in the 1960s, according to the Women's College Coalition.
To go coed, the school must now adopt a new name -- there already is a Randolph-Macon College, a former men's school in Ashland. Christman hoped a task force would have a name to suggest this fall.

It is a private institution. If they decided to go coed based upon a financial need, then that is their decision. They are, or at least should be, allowed to operate their university as they see fit. The market appears to be in decline for single-sex women's colleges, so they adapted because they depend on the market for their existance. Better to have a college there and be coed, then to close outright.

This isn't about being treated equally. There is still a small market for all-women's colleges. So be it. If there were a market for all-men's colleges there'd be more of them left too.
The equality argument comes in when the exclusive school offers somethingthat is special and cannot be obtained at otehr institutions. Like a military-style education, or back in the 60's, the BEST education in the country.
If a man wants to go to a middling liberal-arts college in Virginia, there are plenty to choose from besides this place.
But nice try to create controversy where there isn't any, Peeps.

I think the point here, and maybe I'm wrong but what do I care, is that when a men's organization, even a relatively small one, tries to avoid becoming co-ed it's frontpage material for newspapers and Newsweek. When a women's college does it, there's a small amount of nonjudgemental press and the end. But, really, this is a college...how long has it been since college attendees were actually people of any intellectual weight? Twenty years? Thirty? Forty?!?

I can understand the alumni etc being upset because they chose that school because of what it stood for, and now that's fundamentally changing forever.
Other than that, I don't really see what the problem is.

Is it a fully private organisation? That's pretty much all it comes down to, right? If I fund the formation of a 'people who like to wear their underpants on the outside' club, and not subject myself for public funding and have it on a strict membership basis, then why shouldn't I be able to discriminate against others?
first of all, humanity has been an all-boys club for so fucking long, and women have had equal stand with men for just a drop in the bucket of time.

and he is exactly right. take an institution like curves. it is all women because they want it that way. there are other gyms for men to go to, so there is no reason why they need to go co-ed. additionally, there is nothing special about curves that would make a mn say, "hey, i want in on that".
finally, i went to a college that was all women until the year i started. it is a highly respected teaching college that offers something unique: once you go though the curriculum and graduate, you do not need to take the National teachers exam. There was no huge deal about letting men in, they were right to want access to this exclusivity, and we welcomed them.
you're just really stretching on this one.
