Mastodon soundtrack Aqua Teen Hunger Force movie Artists: Mastodon
Atlanta-based rockers Mastodon - whose latest album, Blood Mountain, received a pretty special ten-out-of-ten review on DiS today - are among the acts contributing to the soundtrack to the forthcoming motion picture adaptation of Aqua Teen Hunger Force.
The big-screen version of the Adult Swim cartoon - find out more here - is to be released in Febuary. Mastodon's Brann Dailor and Brent Hinds told MTV the band's involvement in the film is their "crowning achievement as a band".
Drummer Dailor said:
"I get this random call from an Atlanta phone number, and I answer and it's [Aqua Teen Hunger Force: The Movie director] Dave Willis. I was freaked out because that's one of my favorite shows of all time. We totally geek out on that stuff, and I've bought the DVDs for the guys in Tool and The Mars Volta as gifts."
Mastodon's track features the line, "Leave your babies outside/ We'll run over them after the show". Nice. They didn't write the words, though - that was left to the likes of Willis.
"We're going to be animated as movie snacks," continued Dailor. Hinds added: "When the movie starts, the Hershey bar breaks out of his wrapper and plays a Flying V, he does a ripping guitar solo. And Brann sings like King Diamond."
I had no idea ATHF was getting the big screen treatment--this could be great! Here's hoping they have some great cameos in addition to the mighty Mastodon...

I'm guessing you guys haven't read any reviews yet. Nothing but horrible, horrible things to say about the movie from supposed fans of the show.

Went to a screening of the Aqua teen move last night three words: STRAIGHT TO DVD. The first 10 minutes was like a sub par episode of aqua teen, then it stretched on and on, and on. With a running time of 75 minutes, it was quite a feat to make it seem like 4 hours. The guy said it was 85% done and most of the unfinished stuff involved sound. No sound edit could save this movie from failure. The movie is supposed to be about the origins of the aqua teens, but that only gets explained in the last really painful 30 minutes of the film. Honestly, don't even know what else to say except for the fact that it bored me to the point of wanting to leave, but I knew the end had to come soon, so I stuck it out. Normally I would attribute my take on the movie to me being in a bad mood, or just having gotten off a 12 hour shift at work, but the theatre was filled with hardcore aqua teen fans, and there were only a few chuckles here and there throughout the film. And most of the chuckles came from when they would rehash a joke from the TV show. They need to scrap the film and start over, or just play it on TV, i don't even know if it's straight to DVD worthy. -the raindog

That's not good news. I know they talk about in the Adult Swim bumps all the time but I never know whether to take those seriously or not. Sucks, the show has been away for so long and the last 3 episodes they did basically sucked too. The Mastodon article was the first I had heard of it too.

the show has plenty of great moments, but there is absolutely 100% no way a full movie will be any good at all. most episodes of the recent seasons struggle to fill the 12 minutes and now we have to sit through 80 straight minutes!?

I'm thinking the same thing. Gotta find a way to smoke before hand. I don't think I've ever watched the show straight and I don't intend to try to judge the movie that way.
You guys let me know how it is.

Mercury, if you usually smoke before you watch the show, I definitely recommend you do it before you see the movie. ESPECIALLY before the movie for it is more random than the show and so much goes on (like mentioned earlier, not much of a plot) that anyone of a critical mind will hate this movie. As ab ATHF fan, I enjoyed the movie though. Will probably see it again. Wasn't amazing, ya know, it wasn't "Bigger, Longer and Uncut" out of how much it 'advances/intensifies' elements of the show or anything but it is quite hilarious. Dug the little animation before the main movie started, too.
