I fucking hate this. I don't know how many dvd's I've bought that just end up being rendered obsolete by a newer edition with a better transfer and more special features. Some of them are pretty easy to resist but others are actually tempting and make me go against my general principle of buying something I already bought. Just in the next few weeks I'll be tempted by newer versions of:

A Nightmare on Elm Street

Reservoir Dogs (which is actually an easy call other than the gas can thing)

And the one I'm most seriously considering:



Still, I hate this practice, just do it right the first time.

I don't care what anyone says. I'm all for super editions, whether they're a double dip or not.

i just double dipped for a special edition of not another teen movie that i didn't know was out.

I'm for the nicer dvd's, but most of the time it's done on purpose as a way to milk the fans, ala Star Wars and I just can't get behind that. The Texas dvd is forgiveable considering the first edition was just the old Pioneer laser disc version that came out forever ago. Sadly I paid about $30 for my copy of that. Still, I can see how a lot of time has passed a better version is available. It just sucks buying the same thing twice though. This review pretty much has me sold though:

Wow, that TCM DVD is definitely a major improvement. Definitely a must-buy for me, as it weren't already.

Yeah, I really like the side by sides they do, very nifty. I can justify that one because the documentaries were previously their own purchases and I've never seen either of them.

Jesus, I completely forgot about the TCM 2 Special Edition that's coming out. Fuuuuuuck!

Just sell the old ones.

The pitiful amount of money or trade you get for used dvd's is worse than the double dip.

if it's ya favorite movie .. nothing wrong with the double dip treatment. i agree .. they should just do it right the first time. now with the 2 new formats blu-ray & hd-dvd on the market .. the ring will be waiting for ya .. yet again.

i only got a few movies that are doubled .. version a & version b. only series i bought doubled is the cowboy bebop series. mega fan of the series.

They did this with Dogma. It's a pretty cool thing for the casual fan, b/c all the "real" fans go and sell their old DVD and you can pick it up cheap at the used store if you don't give a fuck about extras.

I usually don't bother wasting my money on the "ultimate edition" DVD's. It's been my experience that the extra features and packaging are never worth the extra money...the exception being the LOTR special editions.

That Texax Chainsaw looks awesome. Seeing on how I don't have an original, I think I'll definitely get that.

The trick is to try and wait it out. Think Hmmm are they going to probably re-release this? And if they do, would I even care? For example - Silent Hill is pretty much complete. It's been said by the director that that was his vision and he's happy with it, and they're probably won't be any more extras then what's on the dvd. So, if you really like that movie, just go ahead and buy it.
But if it's something were there probably could be extras, or it has good effects that could maybe be enhanced, wait a little while. Buy something else in the meantime.

I usually don't care about too many special editions. Just give me the damn movie to watch, and I'm happy. Some of that extra shit, I'll probably only watch one time anyway.

She offered, and it made sense... because i wouldnt have bought the intital release... i would have waited, so i watched it once, and then gave it to her. I think she paid me for the first two, not the third (cause i realized how silly it was).

It wasnt so much me selling it to her, as picking it up for her- i just happened to watch it once first.

If you don't already have TCM then this is an easy call for you. I have the old Elite version that came out way back when and was hard as fuck to find. I'll probably end up with this one too, just because there's so much on there.

There are a few select films that I've been double dipped on and didn't care, because the newer version was so much better. I had Dawn of the Dead bare bones when it was OOP and got the Ultimate Edition when it was released. You can't go wrong with the theatrical, director's, European cut AND another disc of bonus features. Well worth the money. I also ended up with two Sin City dvd's last year because I didn't know the unrated version was coming out. I happily bought the other one.

Movies I got before they got the deluxe treatment that I've yet to replace include True Romance , Memento , and Clerks .

That NOES review gave me a woody.

Finally, my favourite movie ever being given the full digital treatment. I'm gonna dig out my ltd edition 2 tape VHS version and compare on the extras. I may already have most of it but for a new transfer alone, I will buy it.

I will also pick up the TCM. I have the Pioneer DVD from way back. It was actually one of my first DVD's. I won't even mention what I paid for it. However, at the time, I'd only seen very well used VHS copies so I was absolutely stupified by the improvements in picture quality. The new version looks like it has taken a significant step forward though so I better get it.

I wasn't going to mention it either but I paid $30 for that fucking thing, and as you mentioned, I was happy to do it because there were only terrible copies going around back then. Please let me know how the NOES is antiyou, I'm still debating on this one, though I probably shouldn't be. I'm sure it'll be better than the box set version.
