i got an ipod for christmas.

the trouble is, i am running windows me, and the itunes software only installs on windows xp or 2000.

so, i installed itunes on my brother's computer (windows xp) right now to import songs from my cd's onto the ipod, and my ipod is all configured using his computer.

each album i import onto itunes using his computer, i delete after i put it on my ipod, so i don't take up his hard drive.

now, i don't plan on using his computer forever, and will eventually install xp on my own computer, get a new computer or use my roommate's (XP) when i move in to his apartment next week.

since this will require reconfiguring my ipod to another computer/itunes, how can i do this without it resetting my ipod, thus deleting all of my songs.

i'm playing it safe right now, and only have about 10 albums on here, but i would love to go ahead and start putting my entire collection on here, i just want to be assured that there is a way i can do it without losing all of my work in the future when i configure itunes on a different computer.

I had to upgrade to XP (from ME).

I also purchased an external hard drive to store my library, and I'm propogating it right now (all day).

It's been HELL to get everything to work properly, but I'm on a roll....(43 albums down, 300 to go).

There are threads regarding using an ipod on multiple computers over in the Apple forums, do a search under these areas and you should be able to find a thread and a solution to "what do I do if I need to use my ipod on multiple computers..."

thanks a lot for those links. it's great to know that it's possible, now i can commence with the importing full speed ! i only have about 12 albums down so far, and 300 or so to go...

A bigger piece of advice, purchase the extended warantee. I just got fucked by apple, I got an iPod last christmas, and it no longer works, and since it was purchased over a year ago, it would cost $240 to repair. So, extended warantee is the way to go.

someone correct me if i'm wrong, but it seems to me that as long as i have the itunes on manual when i switch computers, my ipod will be intact.

it's a program that rips all the music off your ipod onto your hard drive. that way you can reconfig your ipod to a new computer and just add the songs again from your hard drive.

Yes, that's true. When you connect your iPod to a different computer, it will ask if you want to sync it. Just say no, and set the update to manual.
You can use any number of 3rd party utilities to copy music off of your iPod to your computer, check http://ipodlounge.com for those. Once you have your music copied back to your computer, you can set it to auto-sync.
