NEW YORK - "Law & Order" star Jerry Orbach has died of prostate cancer at 69, a representative of the show said Wednesday.

Orbach died Tuesday night in Manhattan after several weeks of treatment, Audrey Davis of the public relations agency Lippin Group said.

When his illness was diagnosed, he had begun production on NBC's upcoming spinoff "Law & Order: Trial By Jury," after 12 seasons playing Detective Lennie Briscoe in the original series. His return to the new show had been expected early next year.

On Broadway, the Bronx-born Orbach starred in hit musicals including "Carnival," "Promises, Promises" (for which he won a Tony Award), "Chicago" and "42nd Street."

Among his film appearances were roles in "Dirty Dancing," "Prince of the City" and "Crimes and Misdemeanors."

Totally sucks. He was the greatest detective New York ever had.

Jerry Orbach was a fantastic actor. He's one of the main reasons I started watching Law & Oder. He made that show good! He'll be certainly missed.

This is really sad. Nobody thought his illness was this serious. Orbach was also a great song-and-dance man back in the day and won a Tony award. He was in the original cast of The Fantastiks and was also the original Billy Flynn in Chicago.

Very sad.

I remember the episode where Briscoe's daughter was whacked after a drug case -- powerful, powerful stuff. I had to leave the room in which my friends and I were watching because I was fighting back tears. Embarrassing, I know, but it was pretty dramatic...

RIP

I remember the episode too. Powerful scene indeed. He was just a great actor. He never came across has a fake or trying to fake a character.

He was a very smart man. I remember seeing him on Jeopardy some time ago, and he knew everything. I think he won more than any celebrity on the show, or something like that.

i really liked him on law & order, the last episode he was on, when he retired was sort of sad and I remember he didn't look that great, but I had no clue he was that bad off.

RIP Jerry Orbach
